Lost or Stolen Laptop or Tablet? Beware Pickpockets
Here's What To Do!

Laptops left in cabs, tablets stolen from tray tables, and smartphones picked from pockets. Oh my!

With many of our customers travelling over the summer months, we inevitably hear about some of the cases above. We have a page with detailed instructions on what to do, but here's the summary:

1. For a stolen device, try to get a police report from the local authorities (wherever the device was stolen)--be sure to get the report number.

2. Contact both the administrative staff for your department AND Social Sciences IT (530-752-8800, lshelp@ucdavis.edu) to report the theft.

3. File a Property Loss Report with UC Davis Risk Management.

When you contact Social Sciences IT, we may be able to help you to remotely lock and wipe your device if it is a UC Davis-managed device. The sooner you let us know, the more likely we can help.

Keyboard Shortcut of the Week: Image of Typewriter Keyboard
Windows + V for Cloud Clipboard

How often have you needed to copy multiple items from one document to another?

The usual path is Ctrl + C on the first document, switch to the second document, Ctrl + V on the second document, lather, rinse, repeat.

But there's a better way!

Current versions of Windows 10 (1809 and newer) include a new Cloud Clipboard that does two things:

1. Copy multiple separate items clipboard then choose what you want to paste from the things you've already copied (Clipboard History)

2. If you use it on multiple devices, you can copy on one device and paste on another (Cloud Clipboard).

To get started with Cloud Clipboard, just press Windows + V tScreenshot of Cloud Clipboardo activate it. If it's the first time you've used it, just click Turn On.

Once it's turned on, just Ctrl + C as usual to copy text and images to the clipboard.

When you're ready to paste, use Windows + V instead of Ctrl + V to get to the Cloud Clipboard menu to select the specific item to paste. Ctrl + V will still paste the last thing you copied.

You can even pin frequently pasted items to the clipboard to make them easily accessible going forward.

For more on how to make use of this handy new feature, check out this article.

Mac users, don't feel left out! Apple Universal Clipboard provides similar functionality.

Time to Upgrade from Windows 7

Windows 7 Rides Off Into the SunsetAs of January 2020, Microsoft will not longer issue security updates for Windows 7, meaning that Windows 7 will no longer meet campus security standards.

With more than 300 Windows 7 computers still to upgrade in the next eight months, don't wait until the last minute! Contact the Social Sciences IT service desk now to schedule an upgrade to Windows 10.

As some computers don't meet our minimum requirements for Windows 10, we have set aside funds to provide a limited number of memory and solid-state disk (SSD) hardware upgrades on a first come, first served basis. Again, don't wait to schedule your upgrades!
