High Priest Aharon's spirit weakened because he was not part of the princes' dedication of the altar (as described in last week's Torah reading)
G-d consoles Aharon, assigning him with the daily task of lighting the Menorah, as described this week.
"The Holy One Blessed Be He said to him, 'By your life, yours is greater than theirs, for you light and prepare the candles'" (Rashi, Bamidbar 8:2).
Why would Aharon's act be considered greater than theirs? Isn't the dedication of the altar - an historic milestone, and a national moment of inspiration - of greater significance than a seemingly mundane daily maintenance task?

In truth however, we learn from here that small, consistent acts of dedication are far more valuable than grandiose one-off gestures.
Similarly, Rambam holds that a thousand acts of giving small amounts of tzedaka are more powerful than a large, one-off donation of the same financial amount.
Small positive acts, which we turn into regular behaviours, play a stronger role in elevating us spiritually, than one-off moments of spirituality.
