Pelaw Bowling Club to continue
Pelaw Community Bowling Club, whose green is in Bill Quay Park,  will now operate independently of the council and will be granted a 35-year rent free lease.

In the recent Council Budget, the Labour-run Council decided to cut funding for Gateshead’s bowling clubs, including Pelaw’s. This placed the Club’s future in doubt. However, by handing over the running and maintenance of the Club to its members, the Club will be able to continue.

Welcoming this, Councillor Ian Patterson said “This is great news. The club was facing a very uncertain future with the Council cutting its funding. However, by giving the Club independence from the Council a range of new funding opportunities will now be available.  I hope the Club will be part of our area for many years to come and I wish Club members success. Playing bowls has been shown to have benefits for both mental and physical health, especially for older people and I would encourage residents to get in contact with the Club if they are interested in learning more about taking bowls up”

Anti-social behaviour near Pelaw Library
Residents have reported anti-social behaviour happening near McErlane Square, close to Pelaw library. This has included people climbing onto the library’s roof.

Ian said “I am saddened to hear of these incidents. People deserve to live in a safe area and, of course, the cost of any repairs to council property falls to the taxpayer”.

If you witness anti-social behaviour, please contact the Police. Not only does this help catch those responsible, but it also influences how and where the Police deploy their resources. The Police officers who have responsibility for our area can be contacted directly on eastgateshead.npt@northumbria.pnn.police.uk

Well done Bill Quay Primary School!
The children at Bill Quay Primary School have raised money to have a life-saving defibrillator fitted outside their school. The defibrillator is available for anyone in the community to use.

Councillor Paul Diston said “Defibrillator’s are fantastic devices that can save the lives of those who have gone into cardiac arrest. They have instructions on how to use them. A big well done must go to all those involved in raising money for this great device, especially all the school children. I know the community is very grateful for this”.

Would you be able to spare an hour or so every few months to deliver some newsletters near to where you live? If so, please get in touch by replying to this email.
