Amateur Kit House Experts Andrew and Wendy Mutch, authors of the popular Kit House Hunters blog, will provide an informative update on local Sears Kit Homes at a special evening lecture Wednesday, June 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the beautiful Sylvan Lake Community Center, 2456 Pontiac Drive. There is no charge to attend this event which is featured on the 15th Anniversary Celebration Calendar of the Clinton River Trail. Guests will receive complimentary trail mix, courtesy of Kar’s Nuts.
Kit homes, ordered in catalogs, were popular in the first half of the 1900s, mostly geared to the middle class as populations grew and people moved from cities to suburbs that development along the rail lines, according to Kit House Hunters based in Novi. The biggest homes had as many as 30,000 pieces; many buyers built the homes themselves. There are approximately 300 Kit Homes still standing in Oakland County, most located along the Woodward Corridor from 8 Mile north to Pontiac. There are 30 in Sylvan Lake.
The scenic Clinton River Trail, spanning 16 miles through the five communities of Sylvan Lake, Pontiac, Auburn Hills, Rochester Hills and Rochester in Oakland County, is celebrating its 15th anniversary throughout 2019 with a year-long calendar of programs and events for all ages.
Volunteers with Friends of the Clinton River Trail (FCRT) are encouraging hikers, bikers, walkers, birders, canoeists, kayakers plus fishermen and women to take to the trail and enjoy the area history, many sights, amenities and great recreational fun.
