The Reducing Industrial Carbon Emissions (RICE) initiative draws on world-class expertise to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from heavy industry through the scaled implementations of next generation technologies

The UK and Welsh Governments have committed to 'nett zero' emissions, but how can this be achieved?

Here's the latest video from RICE on one of the technologies -  using CO2 emissions from steel production to create value added products from algae.

Dr Darren Oatley Radcliffe, Associate Professor and Chemical & Bio Process Engineer at Swansea University,  leads on Work Package 2 and in this short video introduces and explains the research being undertaken as part of his work package on the Welsh Government and European funded RICE project.

Our Researchers are developing Algal Production Technologies which involves harnessing CO2 from vented waste gasses at Tata Steel in Port Talbot and injecting them into a large biological production reactor. The algae will be processed and converted into a range of products including animal feed, dyes, high value nutrients and possibly even cheese.

Mae’r fenter Lleihau Allyriadau Carbon Diwydiannol (RICE) yn defnyddio arbenigedd o’r radd flaenaf i leihau allyriadau carbon deuocsid cyfleusterau a chyfarpar mawr, trwm trwy sbarduno technolegau’r genhedlaeth nesaf

Mae llywodraethau'r DU a Chymru wedi ymrwymo i sicrhau allyriadau 'nett zero' ond sut y gellir ei gyflawni?

Dyma'r fideo diweddaraf gan RICE ar un o'r technolegau - defnyddio allyriadau CO2 o gynnyrchu dur i greu cynnyrch gwerth ychwanegol o algâu.

Dr  Darren Oatley Radcliffe, Athro Cyswllt a Pheiriannydd Cemegol a Phroses Bio ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe, sy'n arwain ar Pecyn Gwaith 2 ac yn y fideo byr hwn mae'n cyflwyno ac yn esbonio'r ymchwil sy'n cael ei wneud fel rhan o'i becyn gwaith ar brosiect RICE a ariennir gan Llywodraeth Cymru ac Ewrop.

Mae ein hymchwilwyr yn datblygu Technolegau Cynhyrchu Algaidd sy'n cynnwys harneisio CO2 o nwyon gwastraff Tata Steel ym Mhort Talbot a'u chwistrellu i adweithydd cynhyrchu biolegol mawr. Bydd yr algâu yn cael eu prosesu a'u troi'n gynhyrchion gan gynnwys bwyd anifeiliaid, llifynnau, maetholion gwerth uchel ac o bosibl hyd yn oed caws.
