You haven’t received a newsletter from us for some time, but now we have some exciting news to share with you. On 1 August, we will be publishing one of the most extensive and ambitious anthologies we have undertaken to date – Poetry of the Holocaust. And because it has been such a demanding anthology to put together, we have launched a crowd-funding project to support its publication and promotion.

By clicking on this link, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/545039739/poetry-of-the-holocaust?ref=project_build or the book cover above, you can see full details both of the project and how to donate. Here is a short poem by Nelly Sachs, from the anthology, translated from the German by Jean Boase-Beier:

Here's an extract from a poem by Ro B. M. Hairu, ‘Tell Me What We are Guilty Of’:

The Arakan turned into a battlefield,

non-stop gunfire and torture.

Widow meets widower,

The world outside too weak to save us.

Tell me what we are guilty of!

The Arakan turned into a central jail,

non-stop arrests and detention.

Some were killed in hiding.

The world outside was too blind to see us.

Tell me what we are guilty of!

News in Brief

John Kinsella’s The Wound has been named the Major Creative Work of the Year by Curtin University in their Humanities Research Awards 2019. The judges said that the work was ‘ compelling, relevant, and visionary, taking enormous leaps within every stanza, across time, space and genre. It should be on high school curriculums.’

If you are enjoying BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week, Deaf Republic by Ilya Kaminsky, you may be like to read his first poetry collection Dancing in Odessa published by Arc in 2014 – his very first UK publication.
