How Ransomware Threatens Your Medical Practice
- There is a new kind of virus affecting physicians and it’s not the measles. Malicious ransomware software like the Crypto Locker virus can wreak havoc to a physician’s computer information to the point of making it unusable and creating a potential financial crisis for the practice. Once the virus is downloaded, you are typically notified by email that you need to pay the bad guys to unlock your data (that’s why it is also called ransomware). By paying the ransom however, there is no guarantee that the bad guys will give you the key to unlocking your patient data. How can you prevent this? To learn more, read our latest blog post from Joe Cerra, STI National Sales Manager.

ChartMaker® Medical Suite Release 6.3.8
Here are the latest release highlights. For a complete overview of these updates, please see our release highlights page.
- Meaningful Use Stage 3 2019 – Quality Measures – All the Quality Measures for Meaningful Use Stage 3 2019 in the Meaningful Use Dashboard have been updated to the 2018 version for the 2019 reporting period, allowing you to select and run queries specific to the changes reflected in this stage for 2019, and provide accurate statistics for applicable attestation requirements.
- MIPS Dashboard – The MIPS Dashboard has been updated to default to the 2019 view when initially accessed, and prior to selecting a Configuration. Likewise, the default percentages of the MIPS total score will be displayed for 2019: Quality at 45%, Promoting Interoperability at 25%, Improvement Activities at 15%, and Cost at 15%.
- Medications – Proxy Prescribing – The proxy prescribing workflow has been improved to reduce the amount of time and clicks that the prescribing provider needs to successfully send prescriptions for a patient. Whenever a proxy prescriber enters and queues one or more electronic prescriptions, then sends them to the prescribing provider, the queued status will remain active for that prescribing provider, allowing them to easily send those queued medications without having to queue each individual medication again.
End of Life Notice: Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 2008 Server
- Windows XP Users
Beyond being a HIPAA concern, Microsoft is now introducing software changes to other Microsoft software that makes Windows XP truly obsolete. New versions of the Medical Suite released on or after December 1st, 2018 will no longer run on Windows XP. If you have not done so already, please upgrade or replace your current XP machines if you wish to continue using those computers with newer versions of the Medical Suite.
- Windows 7 and Windows 2008 Server
We are a few months away from Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 coming to End of Extended Support. This means that Microsoft will no longer supply them with monthly security updates. At that point, computers and servers running these products will be vulnerable to hackers and breaches and will therefore need to be upgraded or replaced. If you are still running these products at your practice, please contact our Managed Services department at hwsales@stimsp.com.

Practice Manager Tips – Using Patient Recall
Looking for a way to track those patients who have not been seen in a while? Rather than waste precious time running reports for “missing in action patients”, simply add a quick recall to do the work for you! Practice Manager offers a feature called Patient Recall, which can be found under the Charge tab. Once on the Charge tab, select the Patient Recall tab. Simply click new, add in the recall type, recall date, provider and procedure (last two being optional fields), and save it.
