Summer 2019

From the arm chair of Doug Fisher:
A note from the (past) Director of the Center:
I’d like to introduce Bill Lee, the Center’s new Director. Bill is a former Kimberly-Clark Finance/Supply Chain/Strategy executive.  I met Bill a number of years ago as he was interested in ways to help the program.  That led to a teaching position in the new Masters in Supply Chain Management program, and ultimately adding the role of Center Director.

Bill brings significant real-world experience; was deeply engaged with Penn State’s Supply Chain program; enjoys the classroom; has worked with our program for more than a year; and, most importantly, likes to ‘move the needle’.  As I have said many times, it is a great time to be in supply chain – and Bill has some equally great ideas about moving the program forward.  We have always been industry-driven, and he will need your engagement.  More...

From the new guy:

Thank you, Doug! It is my privilege to pick up the Center for Supply Chain Management from this point forward. Things are moving in a great direction and that’s fantastic. Breaking into the next level (i.e., top ten) will be a challenge, in part because of our size, but there are things we can do to elevate our position through even more industry engagement. One of my goals is to change perspectives on Supply Chain Management. After working in supply chain for many years, I have seen how individuals with supply chain knowledge and skills can bring value to many different types of organizations. It’s much more than traditional manufacturing! More...

From Monica Adya - Chair, Management Department:

There has never been a more exciting time to be a participant in the field of supply chain management.  As firms deliberate on the digital transformation of their supply chains, plan for supply chain sustainability, grapple with increasing complexity of consumer demographics, and use supply chains to transform their business models,  it is a great time for academic programs to be crucial players in developing and shaping future supply chain leaders.  More...

In the classroom

Applied Learning - Lean Six Sigma and Applied Procurement

Applied supply chain classes are some of the favorites among supply chain students at Marquette.  In Applied Procurement and Applied Lean Six Sigma, students get the chance to use the skills they have learned in the classroom to make a difference on a project for a company or an organization.

This spring under instructor Michelle Waite, Continuous Improvement Director at Versiti, we had Lean Six Sigma student teams improve the processes on three projects:
  • Key checkout system – Marquette Facilities
  • Residence hall package notification – Marquette Residence Life
  • Barrel inventory tracking – Central Standard Distillery
All of the groups identified inefficiencies in the processes currently being used and made several suggestive improvements for time and cost savings and error reduction.

In spring’s Applied Procurement class nine students were able to realize over $650,000 in savings for eight companies.  Each student worked on a specific procurement project during the semester, going through the procurement process to identify cost savings from vendors.  Projects included:  delivery service providers, chairs, janitorial supplies and more.   Companies sponsoring procurement interns included:  Kohler, Direct Supply, Cree, Milwaukee Tool, Johnson Controls, Rexnord, Lucas Milhaupt and Marquette University.

Jesse Moberg (Managing Director, Asia Pacific Operations, Direct Supply) returned as the instructor to Applied Procurement class this year.

APICS Conference

APICS annual conference was in Chicago in 2018.  We took advantage of the proximity and were able to attend with 12 students.  Highlights included hearing from Marc Randoph, one of the creators of Netflix, several sessions on Women in Supply Chain and hearing Dr. Doug Fisher present on Industry 4.0.

STAFDA Conference

In November, seven supply chain students went to the STAFDA (Specialty Tools and Fasteners Distributors Association) Conference in Phoenix.  At the conference students attended numerous educational workshops, met with professionals in the industry and participated in speed interviews, resulting in several students receiving job offers.

PROMAT Conference

Meeting MU Alumnus Marcus Lemonis

On April 25 the Center for Supply Chain had the opportunity to take seven students to McCormick Place in Chicago for the PROMAT Conference.  A highlight of the conference was keynote Marcus Lemonis, host of the television show The Profit, CEO of Camping World and Marquette alum.  Marcus shared his personal story of hard work and success and at the end offered interviews for senior students seeking jobs.

Operations & Supply Chain Management Club

The Center worked with student leadership throughout the year to create meaningful events and engage majors and non-majors. This year saw presentations by Dr Barratt, Rick Ruzga a visit to Collectivo Coffee and a visit to Milwaukee Tool.
