'No one is left behind'

That is the motto of the South Korean delegation from SungKongHoe University, hosted by KVA last month who were keen to hear about Connected Kingston. They provide rehabilitation services including day services and a community inclusion campaign for people with disabilities. The main purpose of their visit was to find out more about how they can effectively implement a partnership with the local authority. This is part of the ‘care in the community' campaign the Korean government has recently introduced.

The session was well received. Advisor, professor of social work Kim Yong Deuk at SungKongHoe University said, “Connected Kingston is very impressive as it works in two ways; Kingston Voluntary Action has been a key partner in the co-design and co-production of the programme that has been created for the local community. The online platform is not a standalone, but it is being used by the local people for their requirements. Finally, it is also focuses on training local champions to guarantee Connected Kingston is known by local people and used by them too.

We have found it fascinating since we'd also been interested in collecting data for services on offer for local people, put them in a directory and publish it. However, it hasn't served its purpose, often because local people don't know how to make use of it. The other challenge we faced is that the directory ended up being outdated quite quickly due to the lack of updates to the information on there.

We'd like to appreciate sharing the valuable tool we can also develop for the communities where we're working and wish you all the best with it in the future!"

Development update

We are continuing to improve the Connected Kingston digital tool for organisations, groups and users. As part of this a new feature has been added to keep pages on the platform up to date. On 17th of June groups, services and organisations on Connected Kingston whose page has not been updated for over 6 months would have received an email requesting them to do so.If your page is already up to date, there is an option to let us know that. Just click the link provided and enter your login details. If you require any support logging on, adding a phone number or if you think someone else should be keeping the page up to date please email info@connectedkingston.uk or come along to one of our Connected Kingston provider workshops.

Training updates
Workforce  Development sub group

Our approach to training Connected Kingston Champions is currently being updated through the Workforce Development sub-group.  Between September 2018 and March 2019, 186 people were trained as champions and, during this time, the trainers had an opportunity to evaluate the training materials and determine where change was needed.  In future, the plan is not only to deliver Champions training, but also signposting training to enable groups and their service users to make best use of Connected Kingston.

Creation of step-by step, explainer videos demonstrating how to use the Connected Kingston site has begun and will be posted next month. These simple technique  will also provide  the opportunity to record the  voice over in different languages.  Please contact us if you could offer a language and would be willing to record a voice over:

Basic digital skills support to clients at Mencap

Connected Kingston is a valuable resource but we do understand that not everyone will be able to access it because some people in the borough will not have the digital skills required to use it.  Kingston is no different to the rest of the UK where 1 in 5 people lack these digital skills.

At KVA, we were very pleased to be invited to pilot a session working with members of Kingston Mencap to enable them to find activities and services on Connected Kingston.  Our first session was a tour of the site, followed by an activity sheet to ensure that everyone had a chance to look at the Mencap entry on the website signposting tool and find some activities they were interested in.

Michelle Kitch, Administrator at Mencap, was really pleased with the session and made a very good argument for extending the Connected Kingston champions training to a wider group of people.

“I thought it was a really informative session and really feel that if this pilot is going to work then the Champions should be support workers, managers. I am happy to hold a session and training here. “

The next training session to be delivered will include support workers and carers at Mencap.

Work, education and volunteering section of Connected Kingston

Philippa Leary, is a Connected Kingston champion and lead trainer on the project. Last week, whilst working with a new learner as part of her one-to-one digital skills support training for homeless people at Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness, she discovered a section called ‘Work, education and volunteering’, as part of a job search.

Philippa said, “ I really enjoy it when the opportunity arises to help someone use the digital tool. Although I always try to take learners on to the Connected Kingston site so they are aware of its benefits, I had not previously thought to use Connected Kingston to find local training in health and social care.  The person I was working with,  made the following comment:

‘This is very good - excellent the way it shows you where to do the course and when they are free, not paid for courses.  I think it’s going to be really good for people preparing to work in adult social care - and really useful as I know people who would benefit from this.   Some specialist healthcare recruitment agencies offer this very same top-up skills training service and charge you for it. This is amazing.’

As a Connected Kingston Champion, never forget to provide brief opportunistic advice - it could change someone’s life.”
