From the Desk of Our Executive Director
June 20th is a day the United Nations sets aside to raise awareness of the worldwide refugee crises. More than 68 million people around the world are refugees or internally displaced as a result of conflict or persecution. That is equivalent to the population of the world’s 20th largest country. Over a third of our recommended nonprofits work on refugee related issues. You can read summaries of their valuable work on this crucial issue in our recent blog that is highlighted below, as well as in some of this month's Charity Voices articles.
In our ongoing efforts to promote interventions proven to effectively improve life for those in poverty, including refugees, I'm happy to announce that we have officially launched our new affiliate charity in Australia. The Life You Can Save Australia will work to inspire more people to give effectively and to alleviate suffering and poverty in low-income countries. Aussies can now donate to our recommended charities via our new Australian site thelifeyoucansave.org.au.
Finally, with Father's Day coming up this Sunday, June 16th, consider honoring a dad in your life by making a gift to improve life for fathers who are trapped in a vicious cycle of trying to support their families on incomes of $1.90 or less per day. The interventions provided by our recommended charities can literally mean the difference between powerlessness and empowerment, as the stories below so clearly demonstrate.
Good Living and Good Giving,
