Volunteers Needed: Cleanup time!

Now that the floodwaters have finally receded, it has left a lot of trash along our shorelines. Whether it’s plastic bottles and bags, pieces of insulation material, broken furniture, or other debris carried by the racing river, none of it belongs in our waterways. Together, we can keep it from re-entering the river and causing contamination.

In a previous newsletter, we reached out to the community to ask which public places along the river you want to see cleaned up first. We have now compiled a list of shoreline cleanup events we will be organizing between now and the end of June:

  • Saturday, June 15th 10 - 11 am at Parc Moussette, Gatineau
  • Thursday, June 27th 10 am - 12 pm at Westboro Beach, Ottawa
  • Friday, June 28th 10 am - 12 pm at Britannia Beach, Ottawa

Look out for the Ottawa Riverkeeper tent when you arrive. We will be there with buckets, gloves, light snacks, and water to fill your bottles. Bring a hat, sunscreen and wear sturdy shoes.

All are welcome to these events. Please come lend a hand so our shoreline is clean and inviting for all to enjoy. We hope to see you there!

Recreational Water Quality Monitoring Opportunity

Also on June 15th, after the shoreline cleanup at Parc Moussette, Ottawa Riverkeeper staff will be holding a demonstration of water quality monitoring techniques!

This is a unique opportunity for hands-on experience with water quality testing for anyone who would like to get engaged in their community and to participate in recreational water quality monitoring at Parc Moussette this summer.
