UTIG NEWS

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

June 28, 2019
Greetings!

Welcome to UTIG NEWS, a new quarterly bulletin of UTIG news and announcements. Below you’ll find links to stories you may have missed about our latest research and achievements. You’ll also find highlights of recent scientific publications and helpful reminders about forthcoming research proposal deadlines.

The forty acres is a quiet place during the summer semester but here at UTIG I am pleased to see we are as industrious as ever. In the last months, we published exciting research papers many of which are being talked about far and wide.

I am especially proud of the efforts of our student researchers. In May, a paper by
Stefano Nerozzi outlining a new Martian polar ice discovery received much coverage in international news outlets. Also in May, Wanying Wang published an impressively comprehensive paper on seismic anisotropy – work that may considerably shape our understanding of mantle flow and tectonics. This week I was delighted to learn Xian Wu's paper about El Niño and La Niña events had been accepted for early release in the Journal of Climate. And just yesterday, Kris Darnell, a recent doctoral graduate, published new work on methane hydrates that could lead to industrial-scale carbon storage.

These young people’s efforts and those of all our students exemplify just how important our research is in tackling some of today’s most important global challenges. We are indeed very proud to have such a high caliber of students among our scientific cadre.

Below you will find stories about some of the research I mentioned above, a report on an exciting new course teaching python for geosciences, and profiles on a few of our high achieving staff and students.

Finally, I'd like to close by congratulating research scientist Luc Lavier who is only the second ever recipient of the Evgueni Burov medal. This is just the latest in a string of awards earned by staff and students at our institute, underlining once again the excellent standing of our institute and all our people.

My best wishes and regards to all,

Mrinal Sen
Interim Director

UTIG NEWS
UT STUDY SHOWS HOW TO PRODUCE NATURAL GAS WHILE STORING CARBON DIOXIDE
New research led by recent UT Jackson School doctoral, Kris Darnell, shows that injecting air and carbon dioxide into methane ice deposits buried beneath the Gulf of Mexico could unlock vast natural gas energy resources while helping fight climate change by trapping the carbon dioxide underground.
UTIG STUDENT MAKES MASSIVE MARTIAN ICE DISCOVERY
Newly discovered layers of ice buried a mile beneath Mars’ north pole are the remnants of ancient polar ice sheets and could be one of the largest water reservoirs on the planet, according to scientists at The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Arizona...
UTIG IN THE NEWS: LUC LAVIER
The Austin American Statesman reported on Luc Lavier, a professor and researcher at UTIG, after Lavier was awarded the Evgueni Burov Medal by the International Lithosphere Program for mid-career achievements and service to the geophysics community.
'WOW, THAT'S AWESOME!' TEACHING PYTHON FOR GEOSCIENCES
A new course by UTIG's Gail Christeson teaches students to turn data into science with Python.

JAMIN GREENBAUM EARNS FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP
Jamin is a postdoctoral researcher at UTIG and was awarded the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to study how quickly coastal ice is melting in East Antarctica. He will spend 12 months working and training colleagues in China beginning Spring 2020.
UTIG GRAD STUDENT EARNS FELLOWSHIP TO STUDY UNCONVENTIONALS
Sebastian Ramiro-Ramirez, a graduate research assistant at UTIG and a PhD student at the Jackson School, was awarded over $60,000 Equinor to study the rock properties of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs.
