Halfway through the year already!

Hi <<First Name>>

Thanks for being here. I just thought I'd share some updates, thoughts and general information with you as it's such a beautiful winter's day.

Words

I've started to put words into blogs again recently, as a few things have sparked in my mind. As you know, I run MarsLander simulations, to help teams get a grasp for using lean & agile techniques in ITSM, and also to put into practice anything that has been learnt from ITIL4 training. I also run The Phoenix Project simulations which help teams to understand the principles of DevOps, with new or improved ways of working and thinking. These simulations have highlighted that there are similar challenges in most organisations, whether they consider themselves to be mature in their thinking and working, or not. These things can be summarised as:

  • Prepare before planning
  • Communicate between teams
  • Collaborate effectively
  • Create feedback loops
  • Understand goals, roles and the strengths of those around you
  • Have an end to end view of your work
  • Share knowledge whenever and wherever you can

You can read my thoughts here

Sharing

These past few years have seen me move forward with my approach of bringing Service Management and DevOps thinking together. I'm not the only one and I'm not the first, but going to the DevOps Enterprise Summit in 2016 and realising that most people thought of DevOps as only being Dev, certainly gave me the push to grab it by the scruff of the neck and shake some Ops into things.

However, what has become apparent in the past few weeks, is the fact that there are still many organisations out there who are just starting out on the Service Management journey and need to get their heads around the basics. So, I will be launching a Service Management Awareness presentation and workshop in the next few weeks to compliment my DevOps Awareness presentations and workshop. If you know anyone who could use a brief overview and interactive workshop to understand how to start thinking about Service Management, please put them in touch with me. Likewise, if you feel there are certain subjects that should be covered, and are often missed out as "so obvious", drop me a line. I will look to test my presentation out at an itSMFnz branch meeting in the coming months.

 Good Guidance

The collaborative network of Aprill Allen, Karen Ferris, Rob Bull and me, Good Guidance, is starting to come together.  Individually, we are strong, delivering value to customers in our own areas of expertise, but together, we are stronger for you.

Please allow me to share a little bit about what the others are up to and can offer:

Aprill Allen / Knowledge Bird

Aprill is a certified KCS trainer, and Knowledge Management Coach. She has also just launched an on-line course - Keys to a Kick-Ass Knowledge Base. I recommend you check it out.

Karen Ferris

Where to start? Karen is a Facilitator, Coach, Trainer & Mentor around Organisational Change. Her first book on this subject was Balanced Diversity and this has been followed up by the awesome Game On! Change is Constant. Well worth reading.

Rob Bull

Rob's focus is the wider business. He uses Lean thinking to help drive Operational Excellence in companies. To help organisations get started and understand how to proceed, Rob offers some great workshops, including Lego or Captain's hats. He, of course, offers excellent consulting to help identify and drive improvements across the whole of your organisation.

This is why we are excited about Good Guidance. We can help deliver improvements in the way your people or processes work across the whole organisation. Please take a look, or if you are going to the itSMFnz conference in Wellington at the end of this month, come and have a chat. We're all going to be there. Check out the programme here.
