We had an enthusiastic group of nonprofit sector leaders from across the province attend the Saskatchewan Nonprofit Partnership (SNP) Summit in Saskatoon on June 7, 2019. This summit provided an opportunity for leaders of the sector to network, explore current and future priorities for the nonprofit sector in Saskatchewan, and consider potential models for how the sector can collaborate to address these priorities.
The afternoon was made up of interactive table discussions facilitated by Shad Ali from On Purpose. Participants had the opportunity to reflect on the information presented throughout the day and explore ideas around what SNP can look like as a network model for the Saskatchewan nonprofit sector. Participant’s voices are critical in helping us identify what the path forward might look like in Saskatchewan.

Common Good Retirement Plan. Many employers in the sector find it challenging to provide a high-quality retirement plan. That’s why a coalition of philanthropic foundations, nonprofit sector leaders, & retirement security experts launched the Common Good initiative, to create a national, portable retirement income plan for Canada's nonprofit and charitable sector. Funders in the West. University of Regina's Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy has received a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canadian to operate a six-year project establishing a western hub of the national partnership-oriented research on philanthropy, known as PhiLab. The Western Hub of PhiLab will focus on funders, nonprofits, charities, and academics in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. Read more.
Canada's Emerging Social Deficit. Canada faces a slowly intensifying crisis. Demand for the essential services provided by charities and nonprofits will rise dramatically over the next decade, but the sector’s revenue streams are not likely to keep up with demand. By 2026, Imagine Canada projects the sector will need an additional $25 billion to meet spiking demand for services. Read more.
CRA Updates. Reporting season is here for charities and the Canada Revenue Agency has some exciting updates. New digital services designed to organize and manage charity tax activities were added into the My Business Account portal. Learn more. The CRA recently updated a feature on their website that allows users to access information related to charitable organizations, including confirming the charitable status of an organization, finding their contact information, and reviewing publicly accessible financial statements. Special Senate Committee on the Charitable Sector E-consultation Fundings. During the fall of 2018, the Special Senate Committee on the Charitable Sector ran an e-consultation with Canadian charities and nonprofits. They recently released an infographic detailing their partial findings and insights into the sector including number of employees, concerns about finding and keeping volunteers, and a lack of data collection around diversity.
