New Salinas library designed with youth in mind

The new El Gabilan Library under construction on North Main Street is being designed with the needs of tomorrow, with spaces for digital studios, internet cafes and work areas that take into account changing technology, along with increased community meeting space. Compared to the old El Gabilan Library, which stood at less than 3,500 square feet, the new two-story building is nearly 23,000. The $24 million renovation is largely an investment in the city's youth. "If we can get young people involved reading and doing digital stuff, working on their computers, becoming friends versus joining gangs, versus getting involved in inappropriate activity, we win," said Salinas Mayor Joe Gunter. Read more

Panetta Institute develops student leadership

Student leaders from California universities gathered at the Panetta Institute for Public Policy this week to learn about leadership principles, strategies and practices to become more effective leaders, and to encourage them to pursue lives of public service. The 20th annual Leadership Seminar is seven full days of seminars capped by participant presentations on their personal perceptions of leadership and their plans to apply the lessons learned to Panetta Institute Chair and former U.S. Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, Co-Chair and CEO, Sylvia Panetta, institute professors and staff, and fellow student body officers, on Saturday. Twenty-six student body presidents and other student leaders are attending. Read more

Smart technology helps Cannery Row businesses

Smart technology being deployed along Cannery Row (MCBC member) is helping local businesses more effectively target their marketing based on real-time information. The technology can tell businesses how many people are walking down the sidewalk in front of their stores at any particular time of the day and even what gender and age the pedestrians are. San Francisco-based Motionloft heralds its artificial intelligence technology as a game changer for targeted marketing for retail, logging pedestrian and traffic flow data for urban planning and giving commercial real-estate agents a powerful tool to inform potential leaseholders of desirable locations.

The device and software, called ViMo, is a vision-based sensor with AI analytics that can, for example, tell a business that 200 men of an average age walk past the store on Tuesdays between noon and 1 p.m. A retailer could then adjust its marketing to target that particular customer base. Another application would allow businesses to anticipate the impact of promotions, sales, street fairs, and other events in and around the store. Read more

Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course to host Seaside's Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration

The city of Seaside will host its second 4th of July Fireworks Celebration next month at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course. At a special council meeting Tuesday, the Seaside City Council directed the event to go on. Initial planning was for the event to take place at City Hall and Laguna Grande Park for a more walkable community event, but after an appeal to the California Coastal Commission by Monterey residents, the city of Seaside opted to move the event rather than cancel the fireworks altogether.

Councilman Dave Pacheco personally contributed $2,000 to the event to ensure there will be a family-friendly fireworks display in Seaside. Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course has agreed to offer its facility for the event free of charge with Seaside Resort Development and the Monterey Santa Cruz Building Trade Union agreeing to contribute to help fund the event.
The city is highly encouraging biking, walking, carpooling or ride-sharing, as parking is extremely limited. There will be a free and secure bike valet on site. Read more

Report: What will America look like in 2040?

Some eye-opening statistics shared by LanguageLine Solutions (MCBC member): By the time today’s teenagers hit their 30s, there will be more minorities than whites living in the United States, according to a statistical compilation published by Axios. According to the report, the demographic shifts we have seen will achieve a tipping point in the 2040s, at which point the country will be older than it is today, as well as “majority minority.” Among the statistics reported:

  • Only 45 percent of 30-year-olds will be non-Hispanic whites in 2040. And ethnic minorities will become the majority in the U.S. by 2045, according to Census projections.
  • Immigrants will make up a record-breaking share of the population and will have a crucial role in carrying the economic load created by the elderly Boomers and Gen X-ers.
  • Just 20 years ago, less than half the world lived in urban areas, but in another 20 years close to two-thirds of the world population will live in cities. The vast majority of the U.S. population (87 percent) will live in urban areas, according to UN projections. Read more

Future of work may depend on language skills

A survey conducted by American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages found that nine out of 10 U.S. employers report a reliance on U.S.-based employees with language skills other than English, and a third of those state they have a high dependency on bilingual employees. Moreover, demand is on a sustained rise, with a majority of employers reporting their need for foreign languages has increased over the past five years and projecting it will continue to grow.

While English remains the most widely used global language of business, almost one in four employers surveyed acknowledge losing or being unable to pursue a business opportunity over the singular lack of language skills. That increases to 51 percent for those who say they have a language skills gap. Read more
