Helping Families Heal interviews - 2 - Sarah Kerrigan discusses Theraplay®

This month we are delighted to let you know about the latest video in our Helping Families Heal series, hosted by a parent who has adopted a child through Family Futures. How Theraplay® helps children who have experienced complex trauma is discussed with Sarah Kerrigan who is a Senior Dramatherapist at Family Futures and Theraplay Practitioner in training with intermediate status. Sarah demonstrates some Theraplay games in a role play and answers questions that adoptive parents have about how assessments and sessions work, how you can integrate Theraplay into your home routine and tips on finding a Theraplay practitioner for your family.

Assessing Sibling Placements
Free Practice Paper - updated June 2019

Our Siblings practice paper, now updated, has been widely referred to by professionals since it was first published in 2009. Whether siblings are placed together or separately is a complex clinical judgement that requires a comprehensive assessment and an understanding of the impact of trauma on the individual child's development and on the development of sibling relationships in infancy. We also have a duty of care to adoptive parents and their family life in its totality, supporting them to developmentally re-parent a traumatised child.

Responding to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) - an evidence review

Individuals who have experienced four or more ACEs are at higher risk of suffering the detrimental effects associated with ACEs. This review by Public Health Wales, in conjunction with the Public Health Collaborating Unit at Bangor University, presents evidence of interventions to prevent and address adversity across the life course. It provides a broad overview of the international evidence on interventions and identifies a number of cost-effective, evidence-based interventions to prevent ACEs and support those affected by ACEs.

Maternal lifetime trauma exposure and negative infant arousal
This article on how maternal lifetime trauma exposure impacts negative infant arousal post birth (measured at 6 months), regardless of the environment in-utero, is particularly relevant when little is known about a child’s in-utero experience but there is a significant maternal trauma history:
"The analyses suggested that maternal lifetime trauma exposure is associated with several domains of infant negative affectivity independently of maternal stress exposures during pregnancy and that some of these associations may be modified by prenatal cortisol exposure. The findings have implications for understanding the intergenerational impact of trauma exposure on child developmental outcomes."
Enlow, Michelle Bosquet et al. “Maternal Lifetime Trauma Exposure, Prenatal Cortisol, and Infant Negative Affectivity.” Infancy : the official journal of the International Society on Infant Studies vol. 22,4 (2017): 492-513. doi:10.1111/infa.12176
