Audience Manager and Multimedia Contributor - Our Chatham / Chapel Hill, NC
Our Chatham is a project at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Reese News Lab in the School of Media and Journalism. It is through the School’s Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media, which was created with a grant from the Knight Foundation with additional funding from the UNC Office of the Provost.

Our mission is to fill the unmet information needs of the people who live, work and play in Chatham County, North Carolina.

In the process of fulfilling our mission, we are creating for local news publishers a demonstration of how audience engagement and analytics can lead to a financially sustainable model for their organizations.

Audience Manager
Our Chatham is looking for a student who:

  • Is familiar with Mailchimp, and can curate our weekly newsletter with content from our reporters
  • Can gather + curate important Chatham news and summarize it for our newsletter
  • Can manage our social media accounts and create content for these accounts
  • Can update our website regularly 
  • Is comfortable with in-person marketing: AKA, going out into Chatham and spreading the word about Our Chatham and our work
  • Can plan and coordinate events, like the One Chatham community forum, to increase audience engagement and participation 
  • Can brainstorm new strategies to capture our community's attention using insights gained from analytics and data about our audience
  • Can act as the main point person of communication with Hearken, a consulting agency that works with Our Chatham to engage readers.
  • Can help Our Chatham grow our email subscriber list and reader audience 
  • Is comfortable with a lot of independence, and is a highly motivated self-starter
Multimedia Contributor 
Our Chatham is looking for a student who:
  • Has examples of their work creating amazing video and photo projects 
  • Can drive to Chatham County in order to complete video and photo projects for our website and to go with our reporters' stories

Fall Carolina Alumni Review Advertising Sales Intern - UNC GAA / Chapel Hill, NC

The UNC General Alumni Association’s award-winning magazine, the Carolina Alumni Review, seeks an advertising sales intern for fall semester. This intern will assist with maintaining current accounts, developing new accounts and assisting with related administrative tasks.

Typical responsibilities include advertising sales for the Carolina Alumni Review alumni magazine, Carolina Classifieds and Dining Around Town sections, preproduction art proofing, postproduction follow up, distribution of complimentary magazines, billing and tear sheets. Assistance with ad design and production is another component of this position.

The advertising intern will exhibit strong communication and editing skills and excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities. Being detail-oriented is key. Eye for good design and knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud preferred.

This internship is paid and available for 8-10 hours per week throughout the fall semester. This internship is located on campus at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on Stadium Drive.

Sales and Marketing Intern - Participate / Chapel Hill, NC

Reporting to the Marketing Manager and the Marketing and Sales Manager, the Sales and Marketing Intern is responsible for supporting marketing and sales operations efforts. Candidates will help develop and implement a content marketing strategy to aid sales enablement. Essential Functions

Key Knowledge, Skill, Ability and Education Requirements 

  • 0-2 years of experience in marketing, sales, communications and/or an interest in education.
  • Pursuing a degree in marketing, business, sales, communication or related field.
  • Excellent communicator and creative thinker, with an ability to use data to inform all decisions.

Temporary Photographer Mentor - North Carolina State University / Raleigh, NC 
NC State is looking for a temporary photographer mentor in the department of Student Media. The essential job duties are listed below. 
  • Organize or conduct trainings for the whole staff (up to 30) or individuals, pertaining but not limited to: camera basics, portraiture, types of assignments, captioning, photo ethics and photojournalism.

Advancement Communications Manager - UNC Chapel Hill / Chapel Hill, NC 
Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Strategic Communications, the Advancement Communications Manager is responsible for strategy and execution of marketing content in support of the School of Government’s Advancement Division and the University’s For All Kind: The Campaign for Carolina.
 
In this role, the Advancement Communications Manager transforms ideas from all around the School of Government into a campaign-driven content strategy in partnership with a broad range of faculty and with staff from strategic communications, advancement, IT, entrepreneurial initiatives, and other internal divisions as well as with University Development.
This position is responsible for creating and managing a variety of communications materials including branded campaign collateral, newsletters, news stories, web content/graphics, video/photography, presentations, and more. These communications are geared towards revenue generation. This position is also responsible for engaging with and interviewing a vast array of individuals as they relate to private giving, and for training others, including the School of Government Dean and Leadership Team, to use advancement communications content. This position will also analyze existing initiatives and develop plans for strengthening and enhancing communications that support the School’s goals, and increase awareness of the School’s brand. The Advancement Communications Manager will hire/supervise a student employee and/or an intern as needed. This position will make annual budget recommendations. This position liaises with UNC’s Office of University Development.

Metro Editor - Fayetteville Observer / Fayetteville NC
The Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer, an award-winning midsize daily newspaper in southeastern North Carolina, is looking for an experienced, energetic metro editor to help lead our news coverage.

The job entails coaching reporters and working with them to develop A1 enterprise stories, watchdog pieces and A1 Sunday packages in addition to daily content. We are looking for someone who can collaborate and lead a team of reporters to break important stories, juggle multiple assignments and produce journalism with impact. This means going beyond coverage of government meetings and events to dig out the most important stories that people care about -- the stories that affect people’s lives in our community. Our newsroom values innovation and creativity. We are heavily focused on digital, to include a digital team that collaborates with reporters to produce video, podcasts, live broadcasts, interactive graphics and anything else that helps us maximize the reach of our journalism.

The metro editor works with the entire staff to help direct news coverage but has some direct reports. This position requires working some nights. Innovation and Technology Reporter - The News & Observer / Raleigh, NC
The (Raleigh) News & Observer and The (Durham) Herald-Sun in North Carolina are looking for an outstanding reporter to provide high quality news and feature coverage of the region’s technology, innovation and entrepreneurship sectors. 

This is a fellowship reporting position for a duration of up to two years, with the potential for permanent employment. The fellowship is supported through a partnership with Innovate Raleigh, a non-profit charitable organization whose primary focus is to help grow and connect the regional entrepreneurship community.

The goal of the reporting fellowship is to significantly expand reporting on the most consequential innovation, entrepreneurship and technology trends in the Triangle. 

The reporter will be based in Raleigh, home to the Research Triangle Park and to several acclaimed research universities including North Carolina State, University of North Carolina and Duke. 

The reporter will produce at least two stories per week, providing coverage of people, companies, key issues and trends in Raleigh and across the Triangle; and high-quality news and feature coverage of the region’s innovation and entrepreneurship sectors. Topics will include technology startups and main street businesses, biotechnology, and education issues related to those areas.

Stories may also be published by The Charlotte Observer and other McClatchy publications.

The fellowship reporter will report only to editors at The News & Observer. Along with those editors, he or she will meet quarterly with an Innovate Raleigh advisory board.

Candidates must have a college degree and at least two years of reporting experience that includes innovation, technology, business, entrepreneurship or related topics.

Donor and Engagement Specialist - DTH Media / Chapel Hill, NC

The Daily Tar Heel is the nonprofit independent student newsroom at UNC-Chapel Hill. Every day, the student journalists, account executives and media makers at the DTH tell important stories (including the ones powerful people would prefer they didn’t), build community and figure out the future of news one story at a time. When they graduate, they’ll take what they learned to top media outlets throughout North Carolina and the world.

As the economics that sustained independent local journalism shift, this innovative nonprofit newsroom is looking to donations from alumni, friends and foundations to support its crucial training ground.

The part-time giving and donor engagement specialist will be employed by DTH Media Corp. and will work with the General Manager to turn donations into a sustainable and reliable revenue source. The specialist will promote The Daily Tar Heel on campus, in the community and with alumni, and manage and grow important donor relationships.

Communications Specialist - NC Justice Center / Raleigh, NC
The North Carolina Justice Center is seeking a full-time Communications Specialist to assist with day-to-day online and offline tasks such as publication design, media work, and online engagement; developing and articulating a strong message for progressive social change across a wide range of issue areas; and utilizing a comprehensive digital strategy via social media to advance the reach and message of the Justice Center. The Communications Specialist will work in collaboration with our Director of Communications and Design Director.

The North Carolina Justice Center is the state’s leading research and advocacy organization dedicated to transforming North Carolina’s prosperity into opportunity for all. Business Insider Fellowships / New York
We're looking to add a ton of new roles to the teams at Business Insider and INSIDER, including a number of six-month fellowships with September start dates. You can see a full list on our careers page, and I've highlighted a few of our priority openings below with links to apply. 

Most of our roles are based in our New York headquarters in the Financial District, although we have some positions in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Full-time roles offer competitive salary and full benefits packages, including retirement plan options and unlimited PTO. Fellowships run for six months, and fellows are paid $18 an hour. All fellowships listed below start in September (exact start date flexible depending on the candidate's availability), but we do still have one or two spots open for start dates in late June that you can find on our careers page.
  • Business Insider editorial fellowship: We're looking for editorial fellows to join our newsroom on a few of our desks. Editorial fellows report and write every day, and come away with tons of clips and hands-on reporting experience. We have 10 desks that fellows can join, so you tell us where you think you'd fit in.
  • Design and data visualization fellowship: Our graphics team needs a fellow to help build out our data visualization, especially map and chart making. We work in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, and it's a plus if you have experience with animation, interactive graphics, D3 JavaScript, HTML, or CSS. 
  • Photography fellow: Our photo editor is looking for a fellow to help take and edit images for our stories and projects. We use Canon cameras and edit with Adobe tools, but the most important qualification is a great visual storytelling sense. You'll help with shoots and pitch and shoot your own projects.
  • Social media fellow: We're adding fellows to our social media team, which is responsible for distribution Business Insider and INSIDER content across the web. Social media fellows work on specific platforms with either video or written content, and learn how to track performance to improve story selection and packaging over time. 
  • Video-editing fellowship: Our editing team is looking for a fellow to help edit videos on a variety of topics. This fellow will assist on shoots and edit footage to help produce polished, informative videos for our wide audience. We use Canon and Sony cameras and edit in Adobe Premiere.
  • Video-writing fellowship, food: This fellow will write videos about food for our highly engaged audience. They will research and pitch stories and help see videos through the production process. Previous on-camera experience is a plus.
  • Video-writing fellowship, style and beauty: This fellow will write videos about beauty and style for our highly engaged audience. They will research and pitch stories and help see videos through the production process. Previous on-camera experience is a plus.

Events and Communications Specialist - UNC Charlotte / Charlotte, NC
This position will have primary responsibilities for managing and implementing communications for the Belk College of Business, in particular to reach internal audiences, external audiences including the business community. The position will develop communications materials for specific strategic areas of the Belk College, such as original and solicited content, including message for letters, articles, blog posts, social posts, etc. This position will plan, organize, manage and execute strategic Belk College communications projects and events from research, planning, implementation and measurement. This position will contribute to the overall External Relations strategy and priorities of the Belk College.
