The latest on our Founders Day 20th Anniversary celebration……

So far:  A dinner will be held on Saturday October 12 at 5:00 pm to get the weekend started.  There will be a display of historical items to view both days.  Then on Sunday, Rev Nan will share the pulpit with Rev Lori to commemorate this great event.
For those of you who like word games, then we have a treat for you during social hour on Sunday.  A special word search has been compiled for this wonderful occasion!  We hope you will have fun with this little project.
More to come, stay tuned.
Trivia question……How much did a First Class stamp cost in 1999?

Citizens' Climate Lobby Presentation

Concerned about seismic testing?  offshore drilling?  rising seas? more frequent and more damaging storms? flooding? HEAT?  Our changing climate? Well there is one thing these concerns have in common:  our dependence on fossil fuels!  Citizens' Climate Lobby wants to do something about these concerns.

On June 16th, Dave and Kate Hudson will have just returned from Washington DC where they will have attended the Citizen's Climate Lobby National Conference and Lobby Days.  They, along with 1500 other volunteers, will have lobbied on behalf of the bill currently in the House:  The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, H.R. 763,  http://www.energyinnovationact.org   The Citizens' Climate Lobby supports this bill because it will begin to address our dependence on fossil fuels by putting a price on carbon at the source and  returning the collected fees as dividends to households.  Want to know more? Come to our presentation on June 16th, during the coffe hour after service!

Come learn about

  • The climate crisis and how it affects Beaufort County
  • The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, H.R. 763 and why we are excited about it
  • What we learned in DC!

Financial Advisory Committee (FAC)
What we do and who we are
FAC was established to assist the Board in carrying out its financial responsibilities to UUFB.   Our initial meeting was this past January and we have met several times since. FAC’s responsibilities are spelled out in its mission statement and minutes are recorded for each meeting. These documents can be accessed on the members section of the UUFB website.   FAC members include Frank Cummings, Grace Drake, Jean Griffith, Dave Hudson, Usman Ismail, Tim Joy, Jim Miller. Rev. Lori Hlaban attends all meetings. Although the professional background of this group is diverse, all are strongly motivated for the success of UUFB.

What we are working on
At the congregational meeting in December last year, the fellowship approved the budget for 2019 which contained a deficit. Contributing to this was a decrease in pledge units and dollars but with little wiggle room in expenses if the fellowship desires to maintain our social justice programs and activities.
46 out of 71 house-holds currently pledge. Consequently, increasing the number of pledge units/dollars has been identified as the best opportunity to obtain a balanced budget.  Grace Drake and Dave Hudson have  experience in this area and are leading the effort.

At the Board’s request, FAC has taken the lead in this summer’s Special Appeal to obtain funds for replacing the roof and air/heating units in the fellowship hall. The roof replacement is imperative as our insurance on this has been lowered until the roof is replaced. Bids have been received from two roofing contractors and work should start shortly.  We have enough money in the capital account to expedite the roof work. As additional money is received, work can start on the heating and air- conditioners. These units are old, inefficient and have needed to be replaced for some time.

This Special Appeal will henceforth be identified as “Raising the roof and keeping our cool.” We hope to collect $25,000 by August 31, 2019. Additional information will be communicated to members and friends via e-mail,  uubeaufort.org,  and Beloved Community. Donations can be made by check and on-line to the attention of Jim Miller, Treasurer

Your Board, Rev. Lori and members of the Financial Advisory Committee have given financial commitments or donated.  We hope you will too.

    Jean Griffith
    Chair, Financial Advisory Committee

Habitat for Humanity Faith Build Project Update
UUFB is partnered with other Beaufort area faith groups on the LowCountry Habitat for Humanity’s Faith Build House, located at 2523 Mossy Oaks Road.  So far, the frame has been constructed and the trusses are decked.  The next volunteer work will be roofing, windows, and siding.  The nature of the work will change as the build progresses.

Our assigned workdays rotate from Tuesday through Saturday once per week.  Each 4-hour morning workday (before the afternoon heat), up to five UUFB volunteers will work together with volunteers from a rotating partner faith group.  Working together will be a great opportunity to act on our values, to build relationship among our own members and friends, and a no-proselytizing interfaith experience.  At this time, our assigned workdays run through July 2; more will be added later.

Those who are interested, and have not yet completed a 1-hour orientation program may attend the next session on Saturday June 8 at 10am, at the Habitat office (616 Parris Island Gateway).  Please call Lee McSavaney 843-522-3500 at the Habitat office to attend - and let Tom Hlaban know.

Those who have completed orientation, can sign up directly for the 4-hour workday slots of their choice on
our Sign Up Genius page. Some have already been filled - but many good openings remain.  Please sign up at least two weeks in advance of your preferred workdays.  Specific details about each workday can be found there.  If you have trouble accessing the page, contact Tom Hlaban and he can record your sign-up.

a column by Rev. Lori G. Hlaban

Dear Ones,

As I write this, I’m preparing to attend our Unitarian Universalist Association’s annual General Assembly (G.A.) in Spokane, Washington. It’s always exciting to be in the company of thousands – yes, thousands – of Unitarian Universalists! There will be inspiring worship services, thoughtful presentations, meaningful workshops, and interesting business meetings. The theme this year is “The Power of WE” – and I’m looking forward to understanding better how we are more effective when we all work together for a common goal. Board President Randy James and I will share our impressions and thoughts in the July 7th worship service.

Your Fabulous Worship Team™ and I are pulling together the last pieces of our summer worship series. “Voices, Views, and Visions” will feature a variety of people from UUFB and greater Beaufort, offering thoughtful information and insights on our community and our world. The worship services will still be at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings, and the format will be somewhat more relaxed from the regular program year. A schedule of speakers and topics is elsewhere in this newsletter – and is incomplete! We’re still working on finalizing a couple of Sundays.

I encourage you to continue worshiping with us over the summer, and hope you will be inspired by what you hear.

    Many Blessings,
        Rev. Lori Hlaban
