+ NAADD's headlining session with NCAA EVP of Regulatory Affairs Wilcox, Colorado AD George & Ball State boss Goetz has received headlining coverage after Wilcox indicated Notice of Allegations are coming for up MBB programs in connection to FBI developments, some as quickly as next month. Further, George notes the need for clarity on what Judge Wilken considers 'tethered to academics' in the Alston case. Wilcox also points to HIPAA & FERPA as creating hurdles when being able to fully tell the NCAA's story on some controversial student-athlete transfer situations. Goetz says prop betting simply can't be allowed in the legalized sports gambling space. More from those three, as well as in-depth converage of 'Making the Ask,' 'Building a Fundraising Team,' as well as premium seating & tax implication discussions. Full NAADD report. (link)

+ From the NACDA schedule, a sit down with former student-athletes from Coastal Carolina, Cornell & Old Dominion to discuss student-athlete experience. A gambling panel moderated by UNLV AD Reed Francois that included MGM Resorts Prez of Interactive Gaming Butera. From the Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup Luncheon, incoming NACDA Prez & Alabama AD Byrne, "One of the most incredible things about intercollegiate athletics is that it brings people together. You check religion, you check politics, you check socioeconomic status, you check so many things at the door. [...] To all the non-ADs in the room, be here, be engaged so you can learn and grow. To all the ADs in the room, we need to go back to our conferences and tell our peers that we have to be here. For everything we’ve been blessed with we have a responsibility — and with the leadership positions that we’re in — we need to help mentor, we need to help grow, we need to help learn and continue to have a positive impact on college athletics." Also, sounds like in the coming year, NACDA plans to institute some specific programming for ADs, and maybe even newer ADs, to continue learning from the profession’s collective experience." Troy promoted Deputy AD for External Jones to the AD chair after a search that included interviews with six finalists. Chancellor Hawkins on Jones' time with the committee, "He did an exceptional job. The presentation was very, very professional. It laid out facts and figures, it laid out his plan for the first 100 days. There was some very convincing and compelling evidence of his forethought. There was no question but that he knew exactly what he wanted to do – measured against real needs and real objectives that needed to be crafted for this department." Jones: "We’re going to continue to put that plan in place of getting out, meeting people, talking about the vision we have. We’re less than 80 days away from football and soccer and volleyball. We’re going to hit the ground hard, but I’ll tell you this: Our staff is awesome. They are outstanding, the coaching staff as well as administrators. It’s going to be a smooth, really easy transition." More. (link); Here's video of the full presser. (link)
Louisiana Monroe also stayed internal with its new AD decision, removes the interim tag from AD McDonald's title. ULM Prez Bruno: "Scott has a wealth of business experience and is connected in the community. Also, he is a former ULM baseball player, so he has multiple perspectives." McDonald: "A lot of people talk about turning the corner and I think we’ve turned the corner with the coaches we have on this campus. I feel like our football crowds got better and better as we got ourselves back to playing for championships in November. That momentum carried over into basketball with a great CIT run and that’s a testament to our fans." (link)
New Cleveland Cavaliers HC/former Michigan boss Beilein hires Cal WBB HC Gottlieb as an AC that comes with a four-year contract. Gottlieb: "My feeling is someone has to leave an unbelievable, Power 5 head-coaching job to go be an assistant (in the NBA) so somewhere else down the line (Notre Dame coach) Muffet McGraw goes straight from being a (college women’s) head coach to being an NBA head coach, if she wanted to. You have to make leaps in order for people to see it could happen. So, do I feel pressure? No. But I do think someone has to do something hard and scary for the next person to be able to do something. And I’m aware of that." (link)
The Seattle Times' Fields goes in on an alleged sexual assault involving former Washington Senior Assoc. AD for External Shick & former Huskies Volleyball student-athlete Strickland while she was still competing for the Huskies. Shick, who also worked in athletics at Texas & other stops, most recently served as a VP at Grand Canyon, but has been fired in the last week. Strickland says Shick offered her a ride home after practice, then proceeded to assault her in his truck. UW reached a $20K settlement with Strickland on the condition she not file any claims against the university. Huskies AD Cohen: "Throughout the entirety of this situation, our top priority was the well-being of the student, protecting them and adhering to their wishes." Lots more. (link)
The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner compares the Pac-12's expense framework with the other 'Power 5' leagues. Since the Pac-12 also runs a media company, Wilner strips data down to 'Central office expenses,' a metric the Pac-12 spends $40M on annually. Others: ACC = $37M, Big Ten = $32M, Big 12 = $28M, SEC = $44M. How about "Central office expenses as percentage of total distributions": Pac-12 = 11.3%, ACC = 8.8%, Big 12 = 8.1%, SEC = 7.2%, Big Ten = 4.7%. More. (link)

The AP's Russo writes on the reality of being a college FB referee. One perspective, from SEC official Quick, "So if you have a 7:30 kick, the game ends at 11. When you shower your postgame starts at midnight. You have a 5:30 departure out of Atlanta (Sunday) morning. That’s a typical weekend. Then you get up and go to work on Monday." Quick continues by saying all the travel, nights away from family, off-season rules meetings, pre-season scrimmages, lead to many of his peers exiting the business for balance reasons. Pay at the P5 level can be $3K per game net, G5 more like $1,900. SEC Coordinator of Officials Shaw on FBI agents talking to his group about legalized sports gambling, "They scare us to death." North Texas AD Baker & Texas A&M-Commerce's (DII) McMurray chat about collaboration, which notably led to UNT hosting a postponed FB matchup with TAMU-CC & Midwestern State last season. Baker, given his own DII roots, "I understood the magnitude of the game and the implications it could have come playoff time." Also, "By collaborating and working together in college athletics, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel all the time. You can use the best practices in the industry. [...] I was much more prepared when I became an AD because I had conversations with colleagues from all levels." McMurray: "It's always good to exchange ideas because no matter what level, we’re all here to foster a great Student-Athlete experience. [...] You want to give your staff an intentional reason to collaborate so it becomes a part of the fabric of your organization." (link)

The Fresno Bee's Warszawski questions Fresno State spending $50K ("including tradeouts & partnerships) on its new marking video that "won’t result in a groundswell of new season-ticket packages for Bulldogs football. Or fill the lower bowl at Save Mart Center. Or address the growing disconnect between Fresno State sports and younger generations of fans. […] it’s a very good video. But the messaging feels targeted to reach the faithful and inspire the faithful, a group that seems to be getting smaller by the year judging by declining attendance at football and men’s basketball even though both have been successful. [...] the slide of Bulldogs athletics is less about branding and more about a lack of investment in facilities while the department lives beyond its means with 21 sports it can’t adequately support. No marketing blitz can change that." (link); Wake Forest launches it's 'I'm a Fan' grassroots campaign, free yard signs available at three locations around the area. The game day atmosphere was great, it looked very good on TV, it had the pageantry of a high-level football game, the fans were fantastic. It generated more money than it has on any neutral site. This is the right place for it. It makes it more consistent for our fans. Our game has created such excitement, corporate sponsors have wanted to buy into it the way it was last year."
