From Your President
Donna Zimmerman

Greetings Branch Members,

I’d like to begin by expressing my appreciation for the kindness and support many of you have shown me over the past few months as I’ve transitioned into the branch president position. I also want to thank our out-going president, Jill Smith for the tremendous foundation of well-being she’s built for our branch over the past two years. And finally, I must acknowledge and thank our 2019-20 board of directors. At my request, they devoted a weekend afternoon of their summer to begin the process of creating our very own branch strategic plan. I know that for many people, those two words sound scary, but honestly, strategic planning is simply planning for the future. If we base our understanding on this perspective, it’s not only less scary, but I think we might all agree that our aspirations gain traction when fueled by a plan that charts a course from point A to B.

AAUW National has gone through a major strategic planning process over the past couple of years and laid a foundation for us to build on.

It’s no secret, the world is evolving and changing rapidly, and many membership organizations are struggling to remain viable. New generations want different things from their work and social environments and are therefore not as interested in activities that traditionally connected members of an organization. For AAUW, however, many of the challenge’s women and girls face, are just as prevalent today, as they were fifty or more years ago. While we may still be working to advance gender equity for woman and girls after all these years, our mission continues to call us and connect us in ways other membership organizations can’t. No matter your age, the color of your skin or what country you were born in, as women, we all face inequalities that bring us together. And, each day that we wake up to this reality is another day that presents an opportunity for change and to stay the course to gender equity together.

At our Fall Kick-off meeting, we are going to see a video from AAUW CEO Kim Churches, in which she discusses National’s strategic planning process, as well as their hopes and aspirations for the future of AAUW. After that, I’ll share some of the ideas that came out of our Board of Directors planning session this summer and how our branch can earn recognition through AAUW National’s Five Star Recognition Program. With the challenges we continue to face, I believe it's important that we are all aware of what's going on at National and understand how it relates to our branch at the local level. I look forward to seeing you on September 14th. —
Donna

This Month's Meeting
Saturday, Sept. 14th @ Koelbel Library
This meeting is traditionally an opportunity to sign up for Interest Groups and an important business meeting. Please take time to review the 'Proposed 2019-2020 Budget' in this issue of TWIGS, as we will need to approve it during our business meeting. The program will be a video presentation from AAUW CEO, Kim Churches,
who will speak to the goals and directions of the AAUW organization. Many challenges are facing us and our new Branch President, Donna Zimmerman, wants us to know about them. The 5 Star Recognition Program will be presented, as well. Please bring any questions or interests you have about the next year. See you there!

Public Policy Update
Dr. Stacey Spaulding accepted the appointment to the Public Policy Chair position after our final 2018-19 Littleton-South Metro Branch meeting in April. Stacey is a Colorado native, born and raised in Lakewood. She received a BS in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University and then went on to obtain her Doctorate of Optometry from Pacific University of Forest Grove, OR.

While in Oregon, Stacey was a student member of AAUW at Pacific University. She says that she realized then that “AAUW is an organization doing very important work for women and girls”.

Stacey moved back to Colorado in 2000 and has been in practice at Bryan Vision Associates since then. Her in-laws opened the practice over 35 years ago and Stacey and her husband purchased it in 2012. Stacey enjoys reading and yoga and most importantly watching her son play soccer.

For those interested in how our State Public Policy Committee’s 2019 Legislative Agenda wrapped up last spring, please refer to AAUW-CO’s Fall 2019 Bulletin, which should have been in your email box at the beginning of July, or access the final wrap-up report here.

Fall Leadership Conference Re-Cap
Littleton-South Metro had a stellar presence at AAUW-CO’s Fall Leadership Conference this year with ten members attending. In addition to the fun of sharing ideas with other branch members, we took part in a variety of workshops and sessions. With Strategic Planning as the core focus, we learned about setting SMART Goals and what AAUW-CO, along with other branches, are doing in terms of their strategic planning activities. We also looked at leadership styles, enjoyed an excellent presentation on the history of Women’s Suffrage and heard from Annessa Bryant on her experience at NCCWSL. It was an energized day (for some, a day and a half). Thanks to all who attended!!
Donate to AAUW through King Soopers & Safeway

King Soopers:
In case you have not yet registered online so that a percentage of any purchases you make at King Soopers will benefit AAUW, these are the directions:

  1. Using the system will require you to log on to the King Soopers site on the web at https://www.kingsoopers.com. (You will need to have your King Soopers loyalty (discount) card available if you do not already have an online King Soopers account.)
  2. Set up a King Soopers account or Log in to the King Soopers account you already have.
  3. Click on “My Account” and then click on “My Account” when it appears below.
  4. On the far left, click on “Community Rewards.”
  5. Enter “Littleton South Metro Branch AAUW” in the search box.
  6. Click on “Enroll” when the Littleton-South Metro box appears on your screen.

Swipe your loyalty card at every King Soopers purchase and credit goes to our branch. Perhaps friends and family will be willing to register their loyalty cards, too, since the one-time registration is so easy. Enroll and forget it.

Currently, money received from King Soopers goes to AAUW Funds.

Safeway/Albertsons
AAUW members who prefer to shop at Safeway may contribute to AAUW through Safeway gift cards. Purchase a gift card for $10 from Gail Welde, AAUW Funds Officer, and add funds at the Safeway service desk. Use the card to pay at checkout. Each card is coded to contribute a percentage of sales to LSM-AAUW.

Great Decisions to Resume Oct. 14

The Great Decisions (GD) interest group will resume October 14 at the home of Bette Cox (see below for address) with a discussion of The Revenge of Geography by Robert Kaplan, the first of two books selected for summer reading. The second book, City of Thorns by Ben Rawlence, will be the subject of the November 11 meeting. Jane Miller and Gail Welde will coordinate GD this year as groundbreakers Marilyn Hanson, and Gail Wilson step aside. Many thanks to them for their years of vision and hard work.

Returning and new members may sign up to participate in GD at the September Branch Meeting. This will also be the opportunity to volunteer to host and/or provide refreshments for upcoming meetings, including November’s and to order the Foreign Policy Association’s GD Briefing Book for 2020. As 2020 topics are published, there will also be the opportunity for anyone to coordinate discussion of a subject.

Great Decisions is a nationwide foreign policy study group. For more information.

Book Bag
Volunteers Needed!
Our branch has been involved with the Sheridan Early Childhood Center Book Bags program for over 12 years. This program provides approximately 160 pre-school students with books to take home weekly and read with their families. We keep track of reading hours for each classroom and reward students with a celebration and a new book of their own to keep. For this program to continue to be successful, we need our members to be involved. There are several ways that you can do this:
  • Volunteer on Tuesday mornings from 9–11 am and help check-in bags, repair or replace books and replenish parent materials. You don’t have to commit to every Tuesday. I send out a monthly email so you can come when it fits your schedule.
  • Volunteer to run or help with a classroom celebration in the spring. It's is a great way to interact directly with the children we serve.
  • Make a monetary donation or donate new or gently used books that are appropriate for pre-schoolers.
If you are interested in any of these options or want more info, please contact Mary Ann Travis by phone (303-779-4009) or email.
Sheridan High
School Basket
Don't forget we decided last spring to continue to support Sheridan High School with donations of new personal care items like deodorant, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. We will collect your donations at each branch meeting throughout the year.
Mother-Daughter
Tea Re-Cap
Our annual fundraiser, the Mother-Daughter Tea, was a beautiful success! I want to thank all of our members for purchasing tickets, inviting friends and family and for attending the wonderful event held in my daughter’s home and garden, hence the name, Mother-Daughter Tea. Ninety tickets were sold, we had place settings for 76 and there were about 60 attendees (including my friend from Sacramento who helped in so many ways). The CherryTones from the Cherry Creek Chorale delighted us with their choral music selections (and provided a sought-after ‘gift’ of their season tickets for our Silent Auction). Proceeds from the event raised $2,924 for our Community Projects, which you know are student scholarships and other local projects.

An event like this does not just ‘happen’. Our small but mighty committee went above and beyond to bring it all together. Donna Zimmerman coordinated and created the beautiful Silent Auction Baskets, Susan Brodie provided gift cards for them and Linda Joseph created the bidding sheets. Jane Miller created and organized the tickets, name
tags and favors. Judy Kraft brought fresh flower centerpieces in teapots and provided some of the 76 teacups for the place settings. My daughter and her husband donated the delicious food which she and her catering school friend prepared!
It was a “celebration,” and I was overwhelmed with the shower of gifts given to me! What a surprise to be the ‘winner’ of Evette Goldstein’s original painting, titled “Celebration”. Thank you for that as well as the basket of goodies including the Tea for Two at the Brown Palace Hotel. My daughter and I look forward to enjoying that!
Jill Smith, Immediate Past President
National Voter Registration Day

National Voter Registration Day is a national holiday celebrating our democracy. It was first observed in 2012. It will take place on September 24, 2019, and seeks to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise and is a day of civic unity.

Arapahoe Community College has requested that the AAUW Littleton-South Metro Branch and Arapahoe/Douglas County League of Women Voters partner with them for this event on their campus for that date, September 24th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. If you would like to help staff the AAUW table to share our mission and new strategic plan with students for this event, please contact Jill Smith (jillsmithco@gmail.com).
