“Teamwork makes the dreamwork”. I can’t remember where I heard this. All I know is that it has been stuck in my head for months. Perhaps it is the Spirit whispering to me at this point in time where we are set to celebrate volunteers and children’s graduations on Sunday. It is fitting that this “teamwork makes the dreamwork” makes this issue of the Messenger. Absolutely nothing of what happens within these walls and outside of it through the diverse ministries of Woodcliff would be possible were it not for each of you.

I do not know the numbers of folks who receive this e-letter, but this note is for you. Thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I would like to thank you on behalf of Woodcliff United Church. We accomplish so much on a daily basis thanks to your tithes/offerings, gifts of time and words of wisdom. Dreams are something which we are going to be talking a lot about in the coming year. We are going to dream and plan together because we are a people who believe in hope, we are a resurrection people who believe that God is consistently speaking to the Church and asking US to dream alongside of the Creator.

What are your dreams? What is your dream for Woodcliff now, tomorrow and years from now? What dreams can we support each other in? On Sunday, as we celebrate graduations, volunteers and all that has been possible by this community, I invite you into this intentional time of dreaming. I invite you to continue to engage in the teamwork that allows Woodcliff’s dreams to work.

Let’s dream, team.
Blessings,
Rev. Eric
A HUGE thank you to Allison Magnusson and her helpers Kevin and Evan for envisioning and making happen the great new plantings in the WUC front garden. The front walk beds look beautiful. Woodcliff is grateful for all your hard work and artistry.
Thank you to the 12 special people who assisted with this past weekend's first ever AmazinGrace. Some people I talked to were very curious about this event. What happened was people signed up in advance to participate and paid a small entry fee that covered supplies and t-shirts so their acts in the community would not be anonymous. These 12 special people chose as many random acts of kindness as they could complete in the allotted time with the winning team completing the most. Congratulations to our very own Michelle and Eric (a team of 2.5) who completed 8 Acts of Kindness! Please take a moment on Sunday to look at the bulletin board at the bottom of the stairs that has the acts of kindness completed as well as photos from the event. Hope you will join us in 2020 for AmazinGrace V2.0!
It is no secret that without the power of volunteers, Woodcliff United Church would not be the vibrant, caring, and thriving congregation of people we are. This Sunday is volunteer recognition Sunday and, once again, we hope you will participate in this service of Thanks Giving. Leaders and members of groups will be invited up to contribute to an art build to represent our year. Please plan to join us for the service and also for the year-end BBQ celebration after church.

SHARING CIRCLE

The Longhouse Council of Native Ministry started 30 years ago as an outreach to Indigenous people in Vancouver, British Columbia. Established without a building, today its home is a church in the low-income Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood, and its outreach extends to all those seeking a caring community.

The ministry still maintains a significant commitment to First Nations. There is a weekly sharing circle mostly (but not exclusively) attended by Indigenous people, a carving and language class, and several 12-step groups, including an Aboriginal Alcoholics Anonymous group. However, poverty and homelessness, now growing in leaps and bounds, have made the congregation a hub for anyone seeking economic and social justice.

Regular Sunday worship, baptisms, marriages, and funerals are central to Longhouse. So, too, are the weekly food bank, and participation in annual Advent and Lenten vigils to raise awareness of those who are silenced in the city. As the Rev. Barry Morris says, there is a “creative tension between being a pastoral charge and a community ministry,” an urge to support as well as to change society.

Longhouse is one of the many community ministries across the country supported by Mission & Service.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.
