Curbside Composting Collection Program is expanding
Austin's Curbside Composting Collection Program is expanding again! Green carts will be delivered to 53,000 more households and service will begin the week of September 23. After this expansion, around 75% of curbside customers will be receiving the service. All remaining customers will get the program next year, pending City Council approval. If you're included in this expansion, we've mailed you a notification postcard. You can also check your address with the My Schedule tool to see if you're in the service expansion area.

Customers collect food scraps, yard trimmings and food-soiled paper in their green carts. The material is then collected by the City and converted into nutrient-rich compost. After using the green cart, you'll likely have less trash each week. This may allow you to downsize to a smaller, less expensive trash cart.

MoveOutATX helps keep items out of landfills

MoveOutATX is a community effort to keep good stuff out of the landfill during the university move-out season.  The program kept 62 tons of material out of landfills and provided over $150,000 in economic value to our local economy in 2018.

Gently-used items, such as furniture, cleaning supplies, clothing and more will be accepted at temporary donation stations in and around West Campus July 20-21, 26-28 and 31. Items collected will be donated to participating reuse organizations. Participants and volunteers will receive a sticker, redeemable for perks like freebies and discounts at over 25 local eateries and retailers! Volunteers are still needed, so sign up today.

MoveOutATX is facilitated by the City of Austin in partnership with the UT Office of Sustainability, Keep Austin Beautiful and the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling.

Austin treads lightly with tires

Nearly 300 million tires are produced in the United States each year. That amounts to about one per person! What happens to all those tires once they can no longer be used? They can pile up quickly but, ARR has a Zero Waste solution, that even gives back to the Austin community.

Austin residents can drop off tires at the Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center, or have them picked up through their curbside bulk collection service. These tires are then taken by truck to a recycling facility, where they are shredded with a machine that looks like a giant paper shredder. A strong magnet pulls the steel belts out of the shredded tires, and the leftover rubber is then recycled.

Over half a million pounds of Austin’s tires have been recycled. The material has been used to build playgrounds, roads, and track and field surfaces that benefit our community.

Low hanging branches and overgrown vegetation can make your trash, recycling and composting collections difficult and dangerous! Remember to keep trees and bushes trimmed and clear of the public right of way to avoid a missed collection or accident. 🌳🚛
