nanoCluster Alberta and Partners Launch Innovation Challenge
Industrial Solid Waste Characterization

YOU ARE INVITED to participate in a Challenge Dialogue (online survey and in-person) aimed at addressing an important need for the construction sector relating to the automated characterization of industrial solid wastes.

Outcomes resulting from the Dialogue will lead to the creation of a Request for Proposals where innovators like you can offer proposed solutions to this Industrial Solid Waste Characterization Challenge.

This market-pull approach is presented in response to a broader need to provide SMEs with increased access to new markets and new revenue opportunities.

The Challenge Dialogue is being facilitated by nanoCluster Alberta and Tessellate Inc with support from the proven Challenge Dialogue System (CDS). The Challenge is being hosted and sponsored by All West Demolition at its Edmonton-based All West Bio Industrial Park.

A link to a Challenge background paper and supplemental survey is found on the nanoCluster Alberta website. Links are below.

Some Challenge Dialogue participants may be invited to attend a workshop where more information will be gathered and inputted into the RFP. The workshop will take place in Edmonton, Alberta at the All West Demolition facility at 6415 75 Street NW, July 21, 2019 from noon to 3:00 pm.

What problem does the Challenge solve?

The construction, renovation and demolition (CRD) industry accounts for 25% of all landfill waste, and for 35% of all greenhouse gases emitted in Canada (The Sheltair Group, 2008). This waste is often difficult to convert for reuse and therefore not profitable for haulers to recycle. This results in excessive waste streams sent to landfills.

In addition, many international ports that have normally received these and other waste products from Canada are now more selective in what they accept. This places new demands for industry to better manage waste and recycling practices in ways that do not place increased pressure on infrastructure and ecosystems.

What is the desired solution?

The Challenge is to provide an automated method that combines sensing hardware, imaging software and analytics to determine the composition and volumes of heavy construction waste material that is truckedin to the All West waste receiving facility. This data will allow site operators to better divert these waste streams so that they can be more effectively recycled for bio-industrial applications.

What value will you receive from your participation?

Those who can apply a viable solution to this Challenge will be first in the marketplace with a proven alternative to human-driven industrial waste stream characterization.

The opportunity to demonstrate your solution in the construction waste management sector will give you increased visibility in this market and in related industries.

You will expand your personal contacts with a diverse group of influential thinkers and will receive new insights into the needs and opportunities related to this important construction waste management Challenge.

Finally, you may identify opportunities through the Challenge for your organization to be directly involved in the ongoing application of these results in Canada and abroad, and in stimulating related efforts in your organization.

Next Step

Please review the Challenge Dialogue paper on the nCA website by clicking here.

After you have reviewed the paper, you will be asked to complete a survey that will capture your input and inform the Challenge RFP document that will be released in the coming weeks. The link to the survey is also on the nCA website.

For more information, contact nCA Executive Director Keith Gylander at 780-499-6989 or at keith.nanoclusteralberta@gmail.com.
