Happy Friday letter getters,

Last week, we didn't have a LaunchLetter. Sad times! It actually turned into a much needed break for me and allowed me to be okay with not putting something in front of you just for the sake of consistency. That's a little thing I learned from you all. So thanks! We are back this week, and If you are new to LaunchLetter, feel free to read through the archives to get caught up. Of course, you don't have to. Each LaunchLetter is new and different. It represents people who want to share their positive habits and ongoing learnings with you as you build your own company, start a side hustle, or you just like stories. If you are starting your day off with LaunchLetter this morning, welcome. Grab your coffee and settle in.

Danielle O'Rourke,
Founder, Candid

If there's one thing I've learned while writing, editing and producing these LaunchLetters, it's that finding time to put them together while parenting full-time is a much bigger challenge than I expected. I always think I'm going to be ahead of the game, and each Thursday night, for one reason or another, I find myself up way too late, writing. The strangest inner-conversation I have is around identity and balance between being a parent and a professional. I'm not alone. Parenting while starting or running a business is almost impossible. Danielle O’Rourke, founder of Candidbiz.co, and soon-to-be mother of two, is on her path to mastering it. She's a recovering investor, and currently a healthcare strategy/M&A professional. She knows a lot about raising capital, a lot about startups, a lot about motherhood and family, and best of all, she knows balance is a process. Meet your five minute mentor, Danielle O'Rourke.
I wish someone would figure out a way to bottle the emotional and mental energy you feel after a two-week unplugged vacation and then package it into a sparkling water can. I expect this will happen around the same time teleportation replaces self-driving vehicles, so I'd settle today for a scalable way to prevent and minimize employee burnout.

It’s okay to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is what makes us human and helps us connect to other individuals. It’s almost impossible to achieve any definition of success without real connections to other people.

I try to never leave a task unfinished before going to bed. I’m one of those people who obsess about unfinished things and work dreams are rarely restorative.

Raising capital is an ongoing business process, not a transaction or event. Like any business process, it should be planned for, nurtured, and adapted to the changing needs of the organization. Many businesses fail to raise capital because they treat a capital raise like something they will do only once in their lives, which is rarely the case. Whether it's debt, equity, revenue, etc., if you want to grow a business you need a capital strategy to do it.

Always treat people like people. As people, we all deserve respect, dignity, honesty, and to be treated fairly. This applies at both ends of the spectrum. No person is inferior to another, regardless of their name, title, success, wealth, etc., and no person should be elevated to a god-like status where they are placated and indulged vs. presented with the truth.

Recent Achievements:

I kept a tiny human alive while trying to get a business off the ground. I’ve succeeded thus far at the more important of these two and learned a lot from the latter.
