CHUMASH

Parshas Naso - Shvi'i with Rashi

Zos Chanukas Hamizbeiach!” Here are all of the presents that the Nesiim brought to get the Mizbeiach ready to be used every day.

The Torah tells us how many there were all together, so we can see that ALL of their presents made Hashem happy! All together there were:

- 12 silver bowls
- 12 small silver bowls
All together they weighed 2,400 shekels of silver

- 12 golden spoons full of Ketores
All together they weighed 120 shekels of gold

- 12 bulls
- 12 rams
- 12 lambs

And for the Korban Shlomim:
- 24 oxen
- 60 rams
- 60 goats
- 60 lambs

Now the Torah tells us how Hashem would speak to Moshe Rabbeinu in the Mishkan:

When Moshe came into the Mishkan to speak to Hashem, he would hear Hashem speaking SO loud — like the way it sounded on Har Sinai! But it was a neis — Moshe could only hear it INSIDE the Mishkan — nobody could hear it outside!

Still, it sounded to Moshe like Hashem was talking to Himself, and Moshe was just listening in.

The sound came from between the Keruvim on top of the Aron. Moshe heard it from in the Kodesh — he didn’t go into the Kodesh Hakodoshim.

(Unless the Torah tells us that Hashem spoke to Aharon also, Hashem was only talking to Moshe.)

TEHILLIM

66 - 68

In Kapitel Samech-Vov, it says “Hofach Yam LaYabasha” — Hashem made the water into dry land, during Kriyas Yam Suf.

Chassidus explains that this is like what happens when Moshiach comes.

Usually, there is water that covers over the sea. But when Hashem makes it into dry land, we can see what’s inside, what’s usually hiding!

When Moshiach comes, we’ll be able to see things that are hidden. Now we can’t see how Hashem makes everything be, but when Moshiach comes we will see it!

TANYA

Shaar Hayichud Veha'emunah Perek Gimmel

The Alter Rebbe told us how everything in the world is really the chayus of Hashem, and there is nothing else — but Hashem doesn’t let us see the world that way. The Alter Rebbe gave us a mashal to understand this, from the rays of the sun. The sun’s rays are very important — but only when you’re outside of the sun. Inside of the sun, they are not important at all.

The sun is a mashal for the powerful chayus of Hashem.

The rays of the sun are a mashal for all of the things that exist because of this chayus — everything in this world.

In this Gashmius world, the “rays” seem like they are something separate and important. That’s because we can’t see the “sun” itself — we can’t see the chayus that makes it all be.

If we could see the chayus of Hashem, it would be like the rays of the sun inside of the sun! There, the rays don’t count for anything at all! The same way, if we saw Hashem’s chayus, we would realize that all of these Gashmius things are like nothing.

In the mashal, though, the sun is very far away from the world where the rays shine. But that is NOT true about Hashem! Hashem’s chayus is HIDDEN in the world, but really Hashem is right here, not far away like the sun from the earth!

But if Hashem is always here, why can’t we see Him?

In the next few perakim the Alter Rebbe will explain to us how Hashem hides so that even though He is RIGHT HERE we still aren’t able to see him.

HAYOM YOM

Yud-Beis Sivan

When we say the bracha “Shehakol,” we make sure to say Shehakol NIHIYAH Bidvaro, not NIHIYEH (like other people have a nusach to say).

The Rebbe Rashab wrote in a letter:

Be very happy if someone tells you how you can do something better, because then you can fix it and start to do things in the best way!

For example, if you make a book, don’t just listen to the people who say how nice it is. Listening to the people who say how it can be better will make it the best it can be!

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #287 - Mitzvas Asei #243

Today we are starting a new sefer in Rambam, called Sefer Mishpatim! The first set of halachos in this sefer is called Hilchos S’chirus, which talks about a “shomer” and a worker.

Today’s mitzvah (Mitzvas Asei #243) is that we need to follow the halachos about a Shomer Sachar and a Socher, someone who is responsible to take care of something that belongs to someone else with payment. Either they paid to use something (Socher), or they were paid to take care of it (Shomer Sachar).

Even though there are four kinds of Shomer, there are only three mitzvos, because two of them have the same halacha, as we learn today!

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Mishpatim: כִּי יִתֵּן אִישׁ אֶל רֵעֵהוּ חֲמוֹר אוֹ שׁוֹר אוֹ שֶׂה וְגוֹ׳

The dinim of this mitzvah are explained in Perek Vov and Perek Tes of Mesechta Bava Kama, Perek Gimmel and Perek Vov of Mesechta Bava Metziah, and Perek Ches of Mesechta Shevuos.

RAMBAM

Hilchos Sechirus

In today’s Rambam, we learn about being a shomer:

In Perek Alef, the Rambam explains what a shomer is. “Shomer” means guard — it’s a person who is “guarding” (is in charge of taking care of) something for another person. Of course you have to be very careful with something that isn’t yours!

There are four kinds of Shomrim:

1) Shomer Chinam: Someone who isn’t paid to take care of something (like a friend who asks, “Will you watch this for me?”)

2) Shomer Sachar: A person who is paid to take care of something

3) Shoel: A person who borrows something

4) Socher: A person who pays someone else to use his thing (renting)

One halacha is that if you borrow something, you can’t just lend it to someone else — even if it’s a Sefer Torah and you are lending it for a mitzvah!

Perek Beis: This perek teaches us about who can be a shomer. It has to be a person who is allowed to do business according to Torah, because the halachos of shomer and regular business share many of the same halachos. The Rambam tells us that just like with buying something, there has to be a kinyan, to show that the shomer started taking care of it.

In Perek Gimmel, we learn what happens if the thing you were watching got lost or broken. If it happened because you weren’t careful, even a shomer chinam has to pay for it!

~

Chassidus teaches the ruchniyus meaning of these halachos, how a neshama is given to the person to watch. The different kinds of shomer are different ways the person has responsibility to take care that the neshama should be successful in its shlichus in the world.

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos Tumas Tzoraas - Perek Zayin

In this perek, the Rambam teaches us about a person who has Tzoraas that spread all over his entire body, which can make him tahor.

DARKEI HACHASSIDUS

Lebn Mit Der Tzeit

In the times of the Beis Hamikdash, there were special korbanos that needed to be brought on Shavuos.

Since we don’t have a Beis Hamikdash now, we can’t bring these special korbanos. Still, there are certain presents we do give Hashem on the Yom Tov of Shavuos. We add in our learning and teaching Torah, with ourselves and with others. We do it with a new chayus and excitement, the way the Yidden felt when they got the Torah for the first time!

What does a person do if he didn’t bring these special presents on Shavuos?

The Torah teaches us what to do when we miss an important chance: Even if someone missed bringing the Korban Pesach, a very big mitzvah, it is not too late! Hashem gives us another chance to make up for it. Es iz nishto kein farfallen — it’s never too late!

Today is the last day of the Yemei Tashlumin for Shavuos. In the times of the Beis Hamikdash, Yidden had until today to make up for any korbanos that needed to be brought on Shavuos.

If we missed out on making a hachlata to learn Torah with more chayus, or to add a shiur in Torah, it’s not too late! Today is the day to chap arein and do it!

TEFILLAH

Praising Hashem on Shabbos

Every single day, we praise Hashem in davening. We say most of that praise in Pesukei Dezimra.

But on Shabbos, we add in our praise (shevach) to Hashem! We add many pieces of davening that speak about Hashem’s greatness.

We add these parts in three places:

1) Before Boruch She’amar
2) After Az Yashir, leading into Yishtabach
3) After the bracha Yotzer Ohr

The most important paragraph we add is in the third section, after the bracha Yotzer Ohr. This paragraph starts with the words, “Lokeil Asher Shovas,” and it speaks about the praise of Shabbos! All of the other pieces we add are praises of Hashem in honor of Shabbos, but only this one actually speaks about the praise of Hashem’s Shabbos itself.

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Davening Shemoneh Esrei Quietly

We daven Shemoneh Esrei in a quiet voice that no one else can hear. The Chachomim say that a person who davens loud shows that he doesn’t have such strong emunah, because he thinks he has to daven loud so Hashem can hear.

But that’s only if you’ll still be able to have kavana, because kavana is the main thing. If davening out loud will help you have more kavana, and won’t bother anyone else (like if you’re davening at home, and not with a minyan), then you can also daven out loud.

You are also allowed to daven out loud for chinuch, if you want your family to learn how to daven.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

We Will Clearly See!

The Navi Yeshaya told us in a nevuah about Moshiach that we will all be able to see how Hashem will come back to Yerushalayim!

קוֹל צֹפַיִךְ נָשְׂאוּ קוֹל יַחְדָּו יְרַנֵּנוּ כִּי עַיִן בְּעַיִן יִרְאוּ בְּשׁוּב ה׳ צִיּוֹן

Kol Tzofayich Nasu Kol — The watchmen who are standing on the walls of the city will call out

Yachdav Yeranenu — They will sing together

Ki Ayin Be’Ayin Yiru — Because we will be able to see clearly with our own eyes

Beshuv Hashem Tzion — When Hashem comes back to rest in Yerushalayim, in the Beis Hamikdash!

Chassidus explains that this also means that we will be able to clearly see Hashem! Nowadays, we can understand a little bit about Achdus Hashem and Hashgacha Protis from what we learn in Torah. But when Moshiach comes, we will be able to SEE these things clearly with our Gashmius’dike eyes!
