Ismail Abdillahi is a first-year A Level and Honours student studying A Level Economics, Government and Politics and Maths. Alongside his course, Ismail is also taking part in the many student development opportunities at NewVIc such as the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) supported by Greenwich University; the Classics programme in partnership with King’s College, and the Wadham Project with Oxford and Cambridge where he has the chance to attend lectures, seminars and go on residential trips.

STUDENTS BECOME MINISTER FOR A DAY

A group of first-year A level students (Government & Politics and History) took part in a ‘Minister for a day’ exercise at the Cabinet Office.
Over the course of the day, students negotiated with each other, as Ministers do, and had to agree on a budget for their department. Having weighed up different spending pressures and opportunities to reform public spending, they then had to pitch their budget needs to the Chancellor.

FLY THE FLAG
student work with leading artists to celebrate 70 years of universal human rights
This term NewVIc performing arts students have been lucky enough to collaborate with the Donmar Warehouse theatre on a project called ‘Writing Wrongs’. ‘Writing Wrongs’ is part of national public art project ‘Fly the Flag’ co-produced by a number of Arts organisations and charities including the Donmar Warehouse, the National Theatre, Sadler’s Wells and the Tate Gallery.

Inspired by Ai Weiwei’s Flag celebrating universal human rights, the Writing Wrongs project has brought together playwrights and poets with school and community groups to create monologues that explore what these rights mean to them personally.
The students worked with a film company to perform their monologues which will be released as a series of films during Fly The Flag Week between 24-30 June. They will also be performing the monologues live both at NewVIc and in locations around central London throughout that week.

MENTAL HEALTH & BODY IMAGE AWARENESS EVENT

NewVIc staff and students came together to work with the borough's leading experts in mental health and wellbeing. The theme of the event was Body Image and looked into how we think and feel about our bodies and explored thoughts and feelings about our bodies and how this can impact us throughout our lives, affecting our mental health and wellbeing. The event was a huge success, with students taking part in a range of activities and discussions.

HUNTING EXOPLANETS
students present to academics at Queen Mary
A Level Physics students Asif, Daberechi and Maxwell gave a presentation on hunting Exoplanets to an audience of academics and students at Queen Mary University. The presentation was the culmination of five months of research, analysing data from the Kepler Space Telescope using programs they have developed in the Python programming language. The team generated information on 2 exoplanets which are orbiting a star similar in size to our Sun.

Ordinary People … Extraordinary Stories: NewVIc A level students presented creative writing pieces which explored the hidden voices and lives of the individuals associated with the history of Toynbee Hall.
Students also took part in a two-day workshop hosted by Toynbee Hall and The London Metropolitan Archives (LMA). The workshop was part of a creative writing project titled ‘Ordinary People Extraordinary Stories’ which culminated in the students presenting their personal response at a public event last month.

This year we are running a cricket summer camp with the opportunity for players to be selected for a Newham U19’s Cricket Fixture at Arundel Castle in August!
These sessions will consist of technical and tactical drills and scenarios, to help players develop and refine their skills, the opportunity to test and apply these improved skills in nets and outdoor games.

high-level coaching for 15 - 19 year olds
Take part in these basketball summer camps building upon both the physical and mental aspects of the game.
Throughout the camp participants will take part in training and play various competitive games.
The sessions will give existing and prospective students the opportunity to receive high-level coaching from the NewVIc Basketball Academy coaching staff as well as stake a claim for one of the Academy starting positions in September’s intake.

ELITE SPORTS ACADEMIES
compete and train at a professional level
Support for gifted and talented athletes
We offer individual support for students who are identified as gifted and talented at a regional and national level. We support the costs of training and equipment and travel costs to national level competitions.
Cricket Academy
Talented cricket players have the opportunity to play at a professional level and compete against the best in the country. Each year, 20 players who have the potential to pursue a professional career are selected to receive a minimum of 10 hours per week of elite coaching from our Performance and Development Cricket Coach. The Cricket Academy has strong links to several Cricket Clubs where players are referred for country trials.

Sports Leadership Academy
High-quality training and development are provided for students who are committed to sports volunteering or coaching and intend to pursue a career in sport.
Basketball Academy
Talented basketball players have the opportunity to play at a professional level and compete against the best in the country. Each year, 16 players who have the potential to pursue a professional career are selected to receive a minimum of 10 hours per week of elite coaching. As a key partner of the University of East London, elite players are eligible for scholarship programmes to progress to higher education.
