Pastor's Devotional...

Ever felt too small physically or in talent/ability/skill/experience? Bigger tends to be better in the world’s eyes but even that is changing with the trend toward miniaturization (in the future, phones will be implanted inside our ears!)
In the Kingdom of God, though, small has always been valued! In a few weeks we’ll review a movie about superheroes (Ant-Man and the Wasp) whose power involves becoming small through the prism of Biblical truth on God granting great power to small people with strong faith like little David, Gideon, the cowardly leader who liberated Israel with a small army of 300) and the small boy with a few morsels blessed by Jesus that fed 1,000’s. Indeed, He’s still using small people like Mother Teresa and Mr. Rogers (a simple Presbyterian minister with a vision for touching small lives.)
So when you’re feeling inadequate, too small, incapable or incompetent, here’s a few tips for building a large heart (“Man sees the outer appearance but God sees the heart…” I Samuel 16:7).
#1 It’s not about you, it’s about who goes with you and works in/through you. When people like Moses and Gideon felt inadequate for God’s assigned task, He said to them (and says to us), “I’ll be with you.” He is definitely up to the task! “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” (I John 4:4)
#2 When a challenge, threat opportunity or responsibility looms large, seems to tower over you and makes you feel small in comparison, the question to ask isn’t “Why” or “Why me?” but “What’s the first step here, Lord?” That large divine power is stimulated by and flows through obedient action, a small first step. (Tune in for more tips next week!)
Prayer: Holy Spirit, where I feel overwhelmed or inadequate, reveal the next small step I can make so your power and assurance can flow. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
