Hello Friends & Fellow Gardeners!
We often get asked; “When is the best time to plant a tree?” Our standard response is “5 years ago”, as by now the tree would be established and good-sized. We know that this is not what we are actually being asked, but in reality, the best time to plant a tree is as soon as it is convenient. In a perfect world, the best time to plant from the plant’s perspective would be when it is going into or coming out of dormancy. However, with proper care, planting can be done almost any time of the year, ensuring that trees and other plants may start growing as soon as possible.
The other question we are often asked is if the Nursery can bring in large trees for purchase. The answer is yes, but a larger tree is not necessarily better. Research has shown that the larger the tree, the longer it takes for the tree to get established and begin growing. Larger trees are necessary when starting a new landscape, but when adding to an existing landscape, smaller trees are a more economical alternative. Smaller plants come in at a lower price and are easier to install. At the Nursery, we have been planting small trees throughout our display gardens for years, and they have all eventually grown into beautiful specimens.
With this in mind - Has your father ever said he would like a certain tree or shrub near his grill, by the shed, or elsewhere? Give him one for Father’s Day. We even have metal tags that you can attach to the tree so that he can be reminded of what a great family member you are. A plant will bring years of smiles when dad remembers you planting it for him on Father’s Day 2019!
Even better, bring dad over on Sunday for some pork BBQ, a cold beverage and let him pick something out. We will be smoking pork shoulder in a Big Green Egg in preparation for his arrival. BBQ is available only while supplies last.
