The Harris family of Iowa were among the early settlers in the "promised land" of Dakota Territory. Elizabeth Seymour Harris and her son, Frank, chronicled the story of their adventures in letters they wrote to relatives in Wisconsin and Iowa. Read the letters here.

10-Year Anniversary Celebration at Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site
Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site will celebrate its 10-year anniversary as a public state historic site on July 19-21. Activities include site tours, a poster giveaway, a presentation by a former missileer, a free film showing, a visit by a Minot Air Force Base UH-1N Huey helicopter and crew, outdoor games, walking tours, and kids’ activities. National History Day Scholarships
Attention Teachers Grades 4-12
Two North Dakota teachers will receive full scholarships to cover tuition for the National History Day fall semester World War I webinar series. The series includes a monthly webinar and readings from September through December. Teachers can earn a certificate of professional development hours or three graduate extension credit units from the University of San Diego. Scholarship deadline is July 30, 2019. The 2018 motion picture "Woman Walks Ahead" is loosely based on the life of artist Caroline Weldon (1844–1921) and her travels from her East Coast home to Standing Rock Indian Reservation as an activist to help Sitting Bull and others. Weldon served in unofficial capacities as Sitting Bull’s translator and lobbyist, and even lived in his household for a time. She painted up to four portraits of Sitting Bull, of which one resides in the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. Learn more in our blog.

Woman Suffrage and Moon Rock Exhibits at North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum
For most of the 19th century, women could not vote. Some women and their supporters formed organizations and lobbied for the passage of suffrage (right to vote) bills. A new exhibit case features items commemorating woman suffrage in North Dakota.
NASA is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing this month. Learn more and view a moon rock and two mini-flags that travelled to the moon on the 1969 Apollo mission and were presented to the people of the state of North Dakota.
