Stabilizing a swamp with geosynthetics

Sandbridge Road Bridge Replacement

Sandbridge Road is the only route in and out of the coastal community. In order to provide continued access, a temporary bridge must be constructed before the bridge replacement can begin. The site is a swampy area with a high water table which means a solid subgrade is critical.
First, a Type III Impervious Turbidity Curtain was installed to control sediment that could enter the waterway. The custom manufactured curtain totals 150 linear feet. Next, the contractor cleared the swamp and began to fill with stone; the first layer of subgrade support. Layers of nonwoven fabric, grid and 6”-8” stone lifts follow.
Grid and Nonwoven Fabric
The nonwoven fabric acts as a drainage layer and a separator. It prevents stone from falling through the geogrid apertures and contaminating the soft soil. The grid spreads the load across the entire plane and stabilizes the subgrade. As the layers of nonwoven, grid, and stone are compacted, the soft soils are strengthened and hydraulic pumping is prevented.
Fill sand is dumped after several layers of fabric and stone. Now the temporary bridge can withstand heavy loads and a crane sits securely where a swamp used to be.
