Why Keeping Your Chain in Good Health is Important

One of the first things we check when you bring your bike in to BNS Bike Service is your chain. We often get the question what are we looking for and why is it so critical?

1. When we use a chain tool to measure your chain we are looking for chain wear, often referred to as chain stretch. Chain stretch occurs when the inner diameter of the bushings on your chain increase and the pins groove out. This can lead to poor shifting and a loss of efficiency when pedaling. 
2. By replacing your chain often(every 1,500-2,000 miles depending on how you take care of it) you are preserving your drive train. A chain that has wear will not sit as deep in the cogs of the cassette and will thus ride up and wear the cogs and tend to skip the shifting. Obviously cassettes and front chain rings are much more expensive than chains, so keeping your chain in good shape or changing it often saves a lot of money and hassle in the long term. 
3. A clean and properly lubed chain is said to save about 10 watts of power. This may not seem like a lot, but it might be the difference between winning the town line sprint or a few seconds on the hardest climb on your route.
4. To clean your chain you can buy a product such as the Park Chain Washer or do it simply with a thick bristled paintbrush and some degreaser. We offer both for purchase here at BNS Bike Service and would gladly walk you through how to clean your chain. 
5. Once your chain is clean it is important to put a good lubricant on it. WD40 is not the choice as it just attracts dirt! At BNS we offer the Holmenkol Biodegradable Natural Lube and the Holmenkol Extreme Lube as our choices. The Natural Lube does a great job of being a long lasting lubricant that is not harmful to you or the environment. The Extreme Lube uses Nano Technology to offer extreme long lasting lubrication and anti-corrosion for the drive train.  
   Stop by the shop anytime and we will measure your chain for wear for free and recommend lubricants to help you maintain your drive train for the long term.
