It's Marvel Mania this summer as the DowntownDC BID once again transforms Freedom Plaza (13th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW) into an outdoor movie experience with DowntownDC Summer Flicks: Can I Kick It? 

This free movie series brings SHAOLIN JAZZ’s Can I Kick It? concept outdoors, for six summer Tuesdays, offering attendees of all ages a unique music and moviegoing experience curated by DJ 2-Tone Jones. This year’s theme is Marvel.  

“We are excited be bringing back DowntownDC Summer Flicks for a third season, transforming the landmark of Freedom Plaza into an outdoor movie theater and place of community for all to enjoy, " said DowntownDC BID President & CEO Neil Albert. 

Attendees can come early for free programming, to snag an inflatable or cold treat provided by Sandy Springs Bank, listen to a live DJ set, play outdoor games or win DowntownDC Swag. On select nights Pret a Manger to offer complimentary sea salt popcorn or kettle corn. Show your Eventbrite registration and receive a free drink, or cookie with your purchase at Potbelly, 1299 Pennsylvania Ave NW starting at 6pm every Tuesday. 

The series will run for six Tuesday nights from June 4-July 9. Pre-movie activities begin on the plaza at 7:30pm. Movies start at 8:30pm.

The McPherson Square Metrorail Station is now home to public art thanks to an effort led by the BID, which commissioned a mural through DC nonprofit, Words Beats & Life. Lead artist Addison Karl created the colorful, three-panel mural “In Service” to honor veterans throughout history. The installation was made possible through support from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the US General Services Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

BID President & CEO Neil Albert announced the selection of Rachel Rose Hartman to serve as founding Executive Director of the DowntownDC Foundation, the BID’s 501(c)3. The Foundation was reinvigorated last year to support the BID’s major philanthropic efforts: Franklin Park; homeless services and the Downtown Day Services Center; public space improvements and revitalization; and public art and community programming. Macy’s Backstage opened May 18 at Macy’s Metro Center with the help of the DowntownDC BID’s Director of Economic Development Gerry Widdicombe. The off-price retail brand is the first Macy’s Backstage in the District, providing fashion-loving customers a store-within-a-store experience. It is located on the lower level of Macy’s at 13th & G.
 
Make the most of your lunch break at DowntownDC Live Thursdays from June 13 to July 25 from 12pm-1pm brought to you by the DowntownDC BID. Head to Franklin Park (13th and I streets NW) to enjoy live performances by local and international pop, soul and jazz artists. Play lawn games, relax in fun inflatables, or enjoy lunch on complimentary picnic blankets.
 
This summer the BID welcomes 28 new Safety/Hospitality and Maintenance (SAM) trainees to its dedicated fleet of red-and-black uniformed ambassadors. All 28 of the class members are residents of the District of Columbia.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Learn more about the exciting renovation of Franklin Park. Attend a public meeting on June 20 from 6pm-8pm at the Hamilton Hotel [1001 14th Street NW] for an update on the restoration and transformation of Franklin Park, located at 13th and I streets NW. This meeting is hosted by the National Park Service, the D.C. Department of General Services, the D.C. Office of Planning, the D.C.
