Agawam Cooler Community Expo!

Is this a high school dance?

No, it’s the Agawam Cooler Community Expo held on May 23rd! The Agawam High School gym was filled with 300 students, teachers, residents, and exhibitors talking and learning about sustainability. Students explained projects they created in the classroom on subjects like: What is a carbon footprint? How do worms make compost? And what happens to plastic we throw away?

City officials who oversee energy, refuse and recycling, transportation, and storm water welcomed residents and displayed their work too. Vendors provided information about energy efficiency, solar, efficient heating and cooling, electric cars and other ways to use less energy and cut down on pollution. Savvy residents scheduled a free home energy assessment on the spot with our partner American Installations.

ener-G-save, a program of the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation, lent its support in organizing the event. The Foundation made small grants available for participating projects and attendance rewards for participating schools. ener-G-save also collected visitors' Cooler Community pledge forms which asked them what changes they might make in the coming year in order to live in a more energy efficient way.

If you are interested in finding out how your community could be cooler, contact ener-G-save at info@ener-g-save.com. We'd love to work with your town to host your own Cooler Community Challenge and Expo!

New Incentives from the State: Whole House Heat Pumps

Do you have an aging oil or gas heating system that you’re thinking about upgrading? You might be able to take advantage of a pilot program by the state to make switching to a whole house heat pump affordable. The incentive is available for a limited time, so when you get your audit, ask your contractor about the possibility of installing a highly efficient electric system for heating and cooling that will save energy and money.

Energy Tip for June: Stay Cool

As we head into summer, it’s a good time to remember that not only does a well insulated home keep heat inside, it also stops cooled air from escaping throughout the hot summer months.

If you had your audit and your contractor recommended insulation, and you haven't done it yet, don’t wait! You get 75% off any insulation. If you use air conditioning, you will save energy by insulating now. Haven’t had the audit yet? Call us and we’ll match you with a contractor who will help you save money  this summer. Call us at 413-279-9141 or sign up at www.ener-g-save.com/contact.

If you receive fuel assistance, you can have a free audit and access to no-cost insulation and appliance upgrades if needed.
