The buzz from the hub

Welcome to the June 2019 newsletter!

Summer is here, and there's loads going on at granton:hub. This month, we're taking part in the Power of Food Festival, kicking off a new collaboration with Edinburgh Tool Library and adding even more regular events to our programme. Plus, find out how we got on at our wildly successful spring plant sale!

The Power of Food Festival

Summer is here, and granton:hub is once again taking part in the Power of Food Festival (PoFF) - Edinburgh’s annual celebration of community food growing.

The event returns to the garden at Madelvic House on Saturday June 15, with a day of fun family activities, live music, entertainment, workshops, and food and drink. Running from 11am-2pm, entry is free.

Along with gardening workshops, the day's line-up includes art sessions with Edinburgh Scrap Store, and Iron Age food activities with the School of Ancient Craft.

The History archive will also be open, and visitors will be able to meet volunteers and catch up on progress as work continues on our hand-carved replica Iron Age logboat project.

Music comes from Clari-Niteclass, who will be playing outside from 11am-12pm, and there will be a range of tasty food served by Fork In The Road, who are bringing their bike trailer kitchen to the community garden especially for PoFF 2019.

Granton:hub is also one of the stops on a bike tour of PoFF venues organised by Edinburgh Family Rides, setting off from Victoria Park at 10am on the morning of the event. If you’d like to sign up for the guided ride, full details are here.

Now in its fifth year, the Power of Food Festival was set up to encourage greater societal wellbeing, environmental sustainability and social inclusion through the promotion of community food growing.

We can't wait to see you there!

Spring Plant Sale success

A big thanks to everyone who made it along to another memorable and successful spring plant sale.

Staged in the garden over a blustery Sunday lunchtime last month, the event showcased the latest crop of fabulous wildflower plant specimens grown in our nursery in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Attracting plant-lovers from all over the city, the sale raised nearly £400 for granton:hub, which will not only help the development of our activities, but will also go a small way to improving local biodiversity.

With our gardening team on-hand to provide cultivation advice to visitors, the event also featured an exhibition of work by students of our Painting for Pleasure workshops. Meanwhile, the History archive was open for the day, and the garden hosted live music performances and a range of fun craft activities with the Edinburgh Scrap Store team.

Don’t worry if you missed it though - our drop-in gardening sessions run every Wednesday morning, rain, hail or shine. If you’d like to source a particular plant or would like to discuss our grow-on-demand service, why not come along, or drop us an email at wildflowers@grantonhub.org

Edinburgh Tool Library Easy Sharing

This month marks the start of our new partnership with Edinburgh Tool Library (ETL), who start their new weekly Easy Sharing session at Madelvic House on Friday June 14.

The launch will be marked with a Make and Borrow event from 1pm-4pm, where there will be the chance to find out more about the ETL and get involved in building new outdoor seating for the granton:hub garden.

The sessions will then run every Friday from 2pm-4pm, and those attending can get free access to a range of over 1000 tools and pieces of gardening equipment. These can be reserved and collected from granton:hub and borrowed for a week. There will also be the opportunity to learn new skills, undertake craft projects, and get help and advice on community building projects.

The first organisation of its kind in the UK, ETL lends out tools for DIY, gardening, decorating and machine repair so that its members don’t need to own them - promoting the benefits of sharing, and reducing environmental impact into the bargain.

Granton:hub is one of four venues in the West of Edinburgh taking part in the Easy Sharing project, a six-month pilot designed to bring the benefits of the Tool Library’s services directly to people in local communities.

Granton:hub Herbals Walk

Grass Roots Remedies are taking another wild plant walk of discovery along Edinburgh’s shoreline on Monday June 10.

After a successful visit to the River Almond in the spring, the group is heading to Gypsy Brae recreation ground to discover how to identify common edible and medicinal wild plants, and learn how these can be harvested and processed respectfully.

Staged in association with the Edinburgh Shoreline Project, the walk starts out at 6pm at the West Shore Road entrance to Gypsy Brae. Alternatively, those taking part can meet up in granton:hub’s community garden at 5.20pm and walk over to the starting point with Soraya from Grass Roots Remedies.

The walk will be conducted at a leisurely pace and is open to all, and there will be a variety of activities for kids. It will last until around 8.30pm, before making its way back to granton:hub by 9pm. Please wrap up warm, bring waterproof clothing and a snack.
