Forest Park News

From Principal Lisa Newlyn

6/7/2019

It's the final countdown!  True and hard to believe that only three school days remain for our 2018-2019 calendar year.

It's important to me that you know that as we wind down the year teachers are teaching until the final day.  We have units of study in all academic areas to complete, assessments to rate, as well as a variety of "house keeping" items to attend to the year comes to a close.  Thank you for staying close to all the information teachers are sharing with you.  It's a dynamic time of year and we want to end well.  And, attendance is still important.  If you have plans to leave early for the day, or a change of going home routine, please make sure to let your child's teacher know well in advance.

Thank you, volunteers, for making FPE a great place to learn!  We were delighted to honor you with luncheon and desserts.  And, thanks for sticking around to help out with Field Day.  Friday was a great day for fun and celebrations!

Did you see that special book come on last Friday?  Thank to all of you for your support of our Friends of Forest Park Elementary.  With your generous support, FOFPE is able to provide a Summer Scholar book for all our students as they get ready for the first day of school, 2019.  See a list of book titles, below.

On behalf of the FPE Site Council, I want to thank all of you who've responded to the 2019 Parent Feedback Survey.  Taking a moment to share with us your feedback on program at FPE is vital in school improvement planning for the upcoming school year.  You can find the survey here:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FPE20182019

FYI - Report cards will be printed and ready to mail by end of day June 14th.  You'll receive your child's Q4 grades and upcoming class assignment in your USPS mail early in the week of 6/17.

Read on below for more news from our school and community partners.

Warmly,
Lisa Newlyn, Principal

Counseling Update from Miss Lizzie

June 7, 2019
Greetings Forest Park Families!

Thank you SO much Forest Park families for the donations you provided for the 5th Grade Leadership project. The group was able to put together 91 care kits that will be handed out to those in need! We could not have done this without you and we are amazed by the generosity of our community. If you and your family are interested in creating kits on your own (I am planning to keep a few in my car over the summer), there are helpful guidelines on what to include and how to distribute suggested by the Portland Rescue Mission in this video.

During our donation drive, we learned of another 5th grade project at Vestal Elementary that had a Go Fund Me in order to start a Self-Care Center at their school. In addition to providing clean clothes for families in poverty, the center needs toiletries and hygiene products which you donated in abundance. The 5th grade leadership team has set aside some of those items to donate directly to the Vestal Care Center. It feels great to be able to support our PPS community directly.

Thank you again and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,
Ms. Lizzie

MEAL PRICES AND MEAL ACCOUNTS 2019-20

For the 2019-20 school year, breakfast and lunch prices will remain the same as this year.

The Nutrition Services department appreciates any help that can be provided in communicating with families about adding money to their student’s meal account. The department currently has over $375,000 in unpaid meal account charges. All account balances, both positive and negative carry over or remain year to year for every student. Families may contact the department for information and account transaction reports.

Three Great Ways to Keep our Campus Safe for Kids:

1.  Come in and Sign In to get a Visitor's Badge whenever you're on campus.  Never walk directly to a classroom or school space without a Visitor Badge.  See someone without a Visitor Badge?  Welcome them to the office for help.

2.  Keep our track and field for students only during the school day.  No neighbors and no dogs between 8am - 2:15pm.

3.  Late to school?  Park and walk to sign your child in for the day.  Absent?  Call our attendance line: (503) 916-5400.

Personal Device Use at FPE

At FPE, we seek to partner with parents to limit students' recreational screen time. Our philosophy is that personal electronic device use is entertaining and even educational.  As partners in teaching safe and appropriate use, we have guidelines we actively enforce. During class time, Ready to Learn guidelines determine their use, which is only academic. Our school guidelines follow district policy and can be found at this website: https://www.pps.net/Page/10808  FPE is not responsible for the loss, theft or damage to students’ personal electronic device/s.

Specific prohibited devices include: Apple Watches, Gizmo Gadgets, iPhones, Cell Phones, and any other device that can make a call , text, or that can listen in to classroom instruction.

Have questions?  Contact Principal Newlyn lnewlyn@pps.net

During Class Time

  1. Use devices only for academic purposes with teacher permission

  2. Stay completely off social media, texting and other personal uses

  3. Keep device off and out of sight unless on for academic purposes

  4. Leave device in class or other assigned area if leaving the classroom

  5. Use only school computers during class time

  6. Go to the office with permission to text or call a parent/guardian

  7. Give device to school staff when requested

2019-20 SCHOOL DISTRICT CALENDAR

The School Board approved the 2019-20 School District Calendar

It's always hard to make vacation plans at the end of the school year, but just in case we have snow or other calendar changes, note that while June 5, 2020 is posted as our last day of school, plan for the possibility that June 10, 2020 will be our last day of school in PPS.

FPE Safety Committee Updates

FOREST PARK ELEMENTARY

We have safety updates!

 by FPE Safety Committee

The safety committee was formed at the end of the 2018 school year to focus efforts on keeping our teachers and children safe. It consists of Principal Newlyn, 2 teachers , and parent volunteers. This year we have spent hours surveying and organizing to improve safety at Forest Park Elementary.

 NEW signage

Take a look around! Have you seen the FPE track and field signage around the field?  These signs were put up earlier this year to keep our track and field for students only during the school day. No neighbors or dogs between 8am -2: 15 pm.

Camera Action

Project planning for 4 new surveillance cameras has been secured and will be installed over summer break. It was determined by the committee the cameras to be helpful in monitoring entrances, exits, corridors, and visitors.

Coming February 2020 to FPE

As part of the 2017 Health, Safety and Modernization Bond, approximately $5 million was allocated to upgrade school security systems across the district. That work, known as the Secure Schools Project, uses national best practice recommendations that focus on securing school perimeters and controlling access. Below is a list of safety upgrades coming to our school in early 2020.

*Electronic access control systems, including video intercoms and electronic locks at the main entrance. This system gives school staff the ability to see who is at the front of the building, and control who does and does not enter the site.

*Additional public address system speakers in the hallways and gym.

*New signage to direct visitors to the main entryway and require them to check in at the main office.

Future Planning

With review of safety audits, our committee has identified school expansion as a long term goal. With the help and expertise of Mara Rempel, the committee is collecting data to support remodeling of the school to eliminate use of the classrooms portables.

FPE Site Council Updates

Thank you Friends of Chapman and Friends of Forest Park Elementaries.  Our combined event, Digital Families, was a big success!  This presentation was provided through Oregon PTA grant dollars and so I want to thank Oregon PTA President, Kristi Dille, for bringing this valuable forum to our school communities.

Parent Information Nights have been a priority goal for our Site Council, and so I'd like to thank FPE Site Council Chair, Claire Tyler, for her work organizing and planning. Look for more to come next year.  Our 2018-2019 Site Council held it's final meeting two weeks ago.  The minutes of the meeting can be read here:
