Hello Indivisibles!

After the Trump administration's successful effort to separate thousands of migrant children from their parents, the Office of Refugee Resettlement has now announced that they are canceling funding for education, recreation and legal aid for unaccompanied migrant children in U.S. custody. Although this is a violation of the standard of care that is required for children in federal shelters, the administration has made it clear their priority is cruelty, not care. The budget of DHS has instead gone toward keeping people in detention even when it's unnecessary, to separating children from their parents and then keeping them caged, and to diverting funds to build a wall. And while immigrants are kept in deplorable conditions in ICE custody- leading to preventable deaths, DHS is focusing on other priorities, like having the troops that were called up in response to Trump's emergency declaration spend a month painting the fence at the border to improve its "aesthetic appearance."

Congress has the power to decide whether we keep spending money to detain people unnecessarily, in harsh conditions. This week, we're telling Rep. Garamendi that the upcoming DHS appropriations bill must cut funding for ICE, CBP, and the wall.

The next General Meeting is Monday, June 24th, 7:00-8:30pm @ 716 N St, Davis, CA 95616

Meetings are the last Monday of every month. We alternate between Woodland and Davis. New members are always welcome!

Actions this week:

1) Tell Rep. Garamendi to Defund Hate:

Background: (from indivisible.org)
The first draft of the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which was released on June 4, included some key improvements over the status quo; for example, it proposes cutting the number of beds ICE can use to detain people, and taking back the money that Trump stole for his wall when he declared a fake emergency. But the bill isn’t perfect, and Democrats on the Appropriations Committee still need to hold strong to protect these gains and make key improvements.

The DHS Subcommittee approved the bill without any changes on June 5, and the full Appropriations Committee is going to hold a markup on June 11. Your pressure could be the difference that preserves the wins that are in this bill. Republicans are certain to offer amendments that would increase funding for ICE, CBP, and the wall; we need Democrats to reject those amendments, and avoid weakening the bill.

This is our best chance to act to stop Trump’s deportation machine. If you care about ending Trump’s racist immigration policies—like separating, caging, and tear gassing families—make a call today and tell your Member of Congress (MoC) to cut funding for ICE and CBP, and get rid of the slush fund that will allow ICE to continue terrorizing immigrant communities.

Sample call script (your own words are best!):
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [PART OF STATE/ZIP CODE]. I’m calling to ask Congressman Garamendi to pledge to REJECT any amendments to the DHS appropriations bill that would increase funding for ICE, CBP, or the wall. Please cut funding for ICE and CBP, and eliminate funding for Trump's racist immigration policies.

"Donald Trump's abuses of our communities and country demand action from Congress, which has the responsibility and authority to hold Trump accountable. The next crucial step is an inquiry into whether to draft articles of impeachment."
