Planning Permission Granted

Some of you may have seen the article in the Press and Journal this week regarding the granting of Planning Permission for the Glascairn Site. The article can be viewed here https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/inverness/1765849/black-isle-community-significant-step-closer-to-building-its-own-homes-and-centre/
It is now full steam ahead to work with Tulloch Homes, Carin Housing and others to discharge the planning conditions and to get into a position to put our plans into action. There is a requirement for a Housing Needs Survey and we hope that you will engage with this which will be carried out by the Highland Small Communities Housing Trust.
This really is great news and we look froward to the next steps in developing the site for the community.

Black Isle Photographic Competition 2019

Thanks to all those who entered this year's Black Isle Photographic Competition. We were delighted to have had so many entries and of such a high standard.  They all met the brief and show many aspects of the Black Isle and its wildlife.  A selection of the entries  has been put online for you to enjoy and maybe inspire you to enter next year!

History Group - Findon Hotel?

Recently the Culbokie History pages attracted the attention of Clare Howard, Historic England who is researching the history of the State Management public houses which were run by the scheme in the Cromarty district between 1916 and 1971. She had come across references to the “Findon Hotel” in the State Management records which may have been closed upon their acquisition around 1916.

She was interested in locating the building and through the group’s research we were able to inform her that the “Findon Hotel” had been the former name of the “Culbokie Inn” http://www.culbokiect.org/index.asp?pageid=661665and this drawing created by Elspeth Weir’s pupils in the 1970’s
We were thanked for our helpfulness and an acknowledgement that the National Records refer to the “Findon Hotel” up to the year 1918 and in a second document, dated 1918 – 1949 there is only reference to “Culbokie Inn”.
It is nice to know that our researches have been of some benefit.

Children’s Orienteering Event

It was a horrible, cold, wet day for our children’s orienteering event in Culbokie Wood on 5thJune. Turnout wasn’t great – which I’m sure was at least partly to do with the weather – but we were bowled over by the enthusiasm of those that did come along. Two of the children told us how much they enjoyed getting all muddy!!
All the children were from Culbokie Primary and Resolis Primary and we were impressed that most of them chose the hardest course on offer and showed great skill in navigating the controls. The results were announced on the CCT web site and the winners will receive medals which will be awarded at the schools.

Callum Crawford on the run
The event was organised by CCT with help from High Life Highland. All the course design work was done by Oscar Shepherd, a talented young orienteer at Fortrose Academy. CCT volunteers ran the event alongside six young volunteers from Fortrose Academy who helped with registration and marshalling.
Despite the low turnout this was still a great community event which was appreciated by those involved. This is the first time CCT has run a schools event and it was a good learning experience. Hopefully we can do something similar in future years – ideally with the benefit of a bit more sunshine!

Don’t forget that you can have a go at orienteering yourself. Waterproof maps and instructions on how to use the course can be bought either at the Spar shop or at Culbokie Primary School for £1.50 per copy.
