A Message from the President

Give a cheer, summer is here!

Our calendar is jam-packed with our signature events, Carnival and Parade, plus many fun social events, too! What you might not be aware of is that each event, especially Carnival and Parade, can take months of planning and preparation to run smoothly. The best way to say thank you to those who've spent months preparing is to volunteer to help.

Another exciting event is this Saturday from 5-10 PM at the Ann Arbor Summer Festival. We will be celebrating the beginning of summer and thanking our wonderful sponsors. I hope to see you all there.
June Monthly Meeting Recap
As Carena said, our two biggest events of the year are coming up: Carnival and Parade. Because of this, our VPs, chairs, and co-chairs made sure we're all ready for the upcoming festivities.

First, Sean and Ed had us do some role play to make sure we can handle any situation Carnival could throw at us. They divided everyone up into 3 groups - the Jaycees, the families enjoying the Carnival, and the "troublemakers." When it was time to close up Carnival for the evening, things certainly got interesting.
Bill (right) certainly got into character and embraced his role as a troublemaker!

Now that we're all ready to take on Carnival, remember to sign up for a shift!
Next, our Parade chair and co-chair, Carolyn and Katherine, played a little trivia to educate the Jaycees about our single biggest day-long event of the year. We learned some fun facts about Parade, handed out some red, white, and blue swag to the lucky winners, and drove home an important point: you need to sign up for Parade! (Yes, that means you)

Missed the meeting and couldn't sign up in person? No worries! We've got you covered. You can find the sign-up form in the "4th of July Parade" section of The Crier.
Last week's afterglow, like many others in 2019, took place at Fraser's Pub. We hope to see you at our next one!
May and June Events Recap
Park Clean-Up
On May 25th, we helped remove invasive plants from the Burns-Stokes Preserve. The weather cooperated despite the forecast for rain, and Katie Carlisle, Stewardship Coordinator, provided the group with a wonderful guided nature walk while introducing the preserve and identifying the plants we needed to remove. The day saw a little excitement, too, with a sizeable snake visiting!
Food Gatherers Community Kitchen Shift
One week later, on June 1st, we had an opportunity to assist Food Gatherers with meal preparation at the Community Kitchen inside the Delonis Center. Each kitchen shift prepares food for over one hundred people. If you missed this opportunity, we will be volunteering with the Food Gatherers again in August, where up to 30 people can sign up to help sort donated food at their warehouse.

Jaycees, it's that time of the year for our Carnival! Everyone is expected to sign up for 1 or more shifts. We want to have at least 2-3 people on each shift. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Please reach out to me if you have any questions.

4th of July Parade
Community VP: Michael Schultz
community@a2jaycees.org
Our largest community event of the year is approaching quickly. Currently, we have about two-thirds of the number of volunteers we need to ensure a smooth event. If you are in town on July 4th and have not yet done so, please sign up!

Volunteering will take place from 7:15 AM to 12 PM. Parade headquarters will be located on N. University and S. State St. on the Diag side. We need help collecting waivers, ushering parade participants as they march the route, monitoring barricades, and running our bike decorating contest. The Parade Committee will do their best to accommodate your preferences. You may be asked to help with more than one task.

Parade has grown steadily in attendance every year with approximately 5,000 people expected to turn out for the event. We need all hands on deck to bring this holiday celebration to our community.

You can still volunteer even if you're not a Jaycee. We require all volunteers to be at least 18. If you know someone who wants to volunteer, please feel free to pass this along.

Tie-Dye Party!
Now that you've signed up for Parade, mark your calendar for June 29th! We are going to tie-dye our volunteer shirts and tanks!

When: Saturday, June 29th from 1-5 PM

Where: 1411 Rosewood St. Ann Arbor, MI 48104

Why: Tie-dye our T-shirts and tank tops for Parade and hang out with your Jaycee friends! Food will be provided!
Upcoming Volunteer Opportunity

On July 21st, from 9 to 11 AM, we will be assisting Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation with cleaning or maintaining one of the city's many parks. They have not yet identified the specific project or location, but will within the month. Once the specifics are known, a new chapter-wide e-mail will be sent. A sign-up form will also be sent out at a later date.
