NORTH DAKOTA ART NEWS

Updates - Kim Konikow

So this is spring? I am confused by the ND weather! Certainly the teachers and students are out of school, and everyone is frantically planting and gardening! But every day seems different…

We’ve been through a variety of panels of late, and are busy preparing Letters of Agreement. The last few will be approved by the NDCA Board on June 25. All the new, then closing out the old – don’t forget to finish up your final reports by the deadlines provided.

Following a staff retreat, the Board and Staff recently traveled to Watford City for a board meeting with our Strategic Planning Consultant, Sara Peterson. At the fabulous Rough Rider Center a lot was accomplished focused on NDCA’s goals for the future. Jessie Veeder, Long X Arts Foundation, made sure the lovely reception at Outlaws was attended by a broad section of community and artists. It was great for us to speak individually with so many wonderful people. In the fall, we will spend time in Grand Forks!

The NDCA survey connected with the Strategic Plan yielded great results, over 300 responses!. We are condensing the materials to share with you soon.  What we do know is that there are many out in the state who are not aware of what NDCA does, or how to access us… We are working on this. Thanks to everyone who participated!

I recently attended the NDANO Conference in Fargo. Some really great sessions were offered to nonprofit organization attendees https://www.ndano.org/. This week, many of the NDCA staff will be in Minneapolis, attending the Americans for the Arts  annual convention http://convention.artsusa.org/. Learning Opportunities Abound!

A quick note of pride…Vanessa Voskuil, NDCA’s Administrative Assistant, successfully mounted a community work this past weekend at the Heritage Center – dancers and non-dancers, ages mid-20’s-70’s  - collectively expressed their moments of joy. Contemporary dance isn’t the easiest of forms, but Vanessa choreographed a hugely successful performance.
Local attends National Rural Generation Summit
Local Program Director of Turnaround Arts: ND, Billi Jo Gravseth, recently attended the Rural Generation Summit in Jackson, Mississippi. She was sponsored by Arts Midwest, National Endowment for the Arts and NDCA. Billi Jo provided this recap after the Summit: “During the Rural Generation Summit I was immersed in experiences with local people and places, witnessed the social and economic impact for host regions, and learned from a distinctly rural thought leadership -- applied to expressing equity and building cultural wealth in our rural communities. I'm sharing the link of a photography project that was done at the Summit, you can find my photo and quote, as well as others, in the "What’s your oxygen?" section.”
Artists named for 2019 Residency Programs within the ND State Parks
The Artist in Residency Program is a partnership between the ND Parks & Recreation Department and the NDCA where three artists are chosen to each spend one week in a North Dakota State Park. Its goal is to support North Dakota artists in creating works of art that showcase participating state parks while providing opportunities for visitors (of all ages and skill levels) to develop artistic skills as well as a deeper appreciation for the parks and the artworks inspired by them. These agencies have been collaborating for this program for over a decade. In that time, 11 of the North Dakota State Parks have hosted over 20 local artists. This year there were 19 applicants. Lake Metigoshe State Park will host Jennifer Matthews (Bismarck) July 14-21, Fort Ransom State Park will host Linda Roesch (Jamestown) August 4-11 and Fort Stevenson State Park will host Karen Bakke (Grand Forks) August 11-18. For more information contact Amy Schimetz, Artist in Residency Program Coordinator at 701-263-4514.

Your Advocacy makes a difference
Do you want more prospective donors and supporters to understand how important your arts mission is? Do you want to see a higher state investment in the arts in North Dakota? Do you want public arts resources to reach further into rural and underserved communities? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you need to become an arts advocate! NDCA recommends these tools: Three Simple Ways to Advocate for the Arts offers practical action steps for cultural organizations, artists, educators and arts audiences and Advocacy vs. Lobbying: An Arts Primer helps you debunk common myths and misconceptions about advocacy. Be sure to convey that the arts work in concert with many other sectors (like education, health, tourism and rural development) to help North Dakota thrive. Every voice matters, so please lend YOUR voice to the chorus of arts supporters in our state!
