Hello Bristol Public Engagement Network and welcome to Connect, our monthly bulletin for staff and students interested in public engagement. This month we're launching our Summer Seed Fund - £500 is available for University of Bristol staff and students to make the engagement ideas a reality!

Apply for our Summer Seed Fund

Take part in a professional development programme with the NCCPE to learn what it means to be an engaged researcher, and to explore the quality and value of engagement. For more info and to apply go to their website.

Develop skills in facilitation for Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) activities as part of a workshop (19 June) hosted by People in Health West of England.

Find out about science communication at the Sci Comm South West conference (21 June) featuring talks, workshops and networking opportunities.

Work at the Royal Institution this Autumn to support their Secondary Maths Masterclass programme in London. The internship is open to PhD students eligible for a stipend via their DTP/University/Research Council (deadline 1 July).


Research a new idea abroad and make change in the UK by applying for a Churchill Fellowship. It funds a 4-8 week trip to meet experts around the world to learn about a topic you're passionate about (deadline 17 September).

Raise aspirations of school students and engage them about University and careers in research. Sir Bernard Lovell School are hosting a careers fair for 11-15 year olds (2 July) and are looking for researchers to run an interactive stand about their work. For more info contact Ellie Cripps (deadline 14 June).

Inform teachers about the latest research through “Subject Knowledge Enhancement” sessions. The Cabot Learning Federation are hosting workshops for their teachers (5 July) and would like researchers to lead them. For more info contact Ellie Cripps.


Get your engagement ideas off the ground with our Summer Seed Fund. Up to £500 is available for innovative engagement ideas that you haven't been able to fund elsewhere. The short application form is available on our website (deadline 5 July).

Inspire audiences from school children to policy makers by taking part in the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2020 (deadline 10 September).

Engage school students age 9-14 about your work by taking part in a hands-on Research Fair at We The Curious (27 September). The event is part of FUTURES, for more info email the FUTURES team.

Get involved in Fun Palaces (5/6 October), an international community campaign to share and discuss research in local community settings, and connect with Bristol locals. For more info go to the website or email Jo Stubbs.

Support school students to build an electric car as part of the Greenpower competition. Chipping Sodbury School are looking for volunteers to support their Greenpower club (Mondays in term time, 6-8pm). For more info contact Ellie Cripps.

Come along to the Questioning Quantum event by award-winning Kilter Theatre and researchers from the Quantum Engineering Technology Labs. The event is part of a year-long residency where Kilter's directors are spending time with researchers in Quantum and VR to create performance events that engage people with the ethics of these technologies.
