Dear <<First Name>>

Welcome to our latest newsletter - as ever, you'll find within it lots of links, blogs, and news stories, and this time there's also a podcast, which I hope you like!

WHERE TO FIND ME! HOW TO HEAR ME!

  • I'm very excited to have been interviewed by Kenneth from the Do More Good podcast team, and the episode (iTunes) has just dropped! Or check it out here (Spotify)! Kenneth and I tackle a whole range of subjects including mentoring, my journey into the sector and into consulting, embracing vulnerability, the beauty of parkrun, and my thoughts on the future of the charity sector.
  • And I'm really looking forward to speaking at the Institute of Fundraising's Fundraising Convention 2019 (taking place 1-3 July) this year! David Burgess, Lizzi Hollis and I are leading Fundraising - It's a funny old game on Wednesday 3 July, in which fundraising will meet football in a ‘Match of the Day’ themed session. I'm also attending on the other two days, so hope to see you there.

MY QUICK READS - ACROSS THE SECTOR

There's been so much interesting and important writing about charities since my last newsletter.

Much debate followed the publication of CAF UK Giving 2019 and IoF’s new research with PwC - Fundraising for Impact with a number of national newspapers including the Guardian picking up the story (Fewer Britons donate to charities after scandals erode trust). This provoked a very interesting and well thought out response from the charity sector, including Karl Wilding (Are fewer people supporting charities?), Daniel Fluskey in this Twitter thread, and Mark Phillips (What does the latest research tell us about the state of fundraising?).

Here's a flavour of some other great charity sector writing:

Raising the bar of leadership excellence - Rita Neligan Medcalf and Kevin Downsworth
Charity leadership in the age of populism - Lucy Caldicott
6 questions trustees should ask their fundraisers - Susie Hills

Effective delegation - Management Centre
A golden formula for generating trust - Kate Lee
How to survive non profit founder syndrome - Rachel Muir

On fundraising

Fundraising was not and is not 'broken' - Ian MacQuillin
The Donor Pyramid and Marketing Funnel Have Changed - Claire Axelrad
How to be more consistent and transform your fundraising results - Vanessa Chase
Seven fundraising tips from two decades of wisdom - John Baguley
Thanks but no thanks. When should charities refuse donations? Sarah Atkinson

Working with storytellers: It's never our story to tell, it's theirs - Hayley Tomkinson
Why your fancy newsletter is failing you - Mary Cahalane

Why 'sadvertising' and melancholy marketing doesn’t help charities - Sophie Russell

And here are some of my own recent charity blog posts:

"We all know about the tight deadlines, the overlapping high targets, competing priorities and demanding colleagues we face. These can lead to long hours, anxiety, stress and feeling inadequate. But there’s more."

"You had me at pizza. I’d been looking forward to Pizza for Losers, a new charity sector event at which speakers reveal lessons from their failures, for a while. It didn’t disappoint." Read more.

"York has long held a place in this southerner’s heart. It’s the city in which I got married. And I just find it beautiful like no other place, particularly on a sun-dappled early evening: the medieval streets, the Minster, the city walls, the river running through it. But I’ve never really associated it with my work..." LET'S STAY IN TOUCH

That's all for now. Do give me a call or drop me a line if you would like to meet up, or find me on Twitter!
