Dear Narwhals,

We’ve heard from so many of you over the past year that you’d love The Narwhal to produce a podcast.

Well, we listened and today we’re launching our very first podcast!

It’s called Undercurrent (aren’t we clever?) and season one is a doozy of a tale about the life and death of a beloved grizzly bear: Bear 148.

Bear 148 is a six-part series that tells the story of a female grizzly bear who lived in Banff, the busiest of Canada's national parks.

Here's the thing: Bear 148 was a bit of a celebrity. When she walked across a parking lot — which she did, often — she could easily end up on the front page of a national newspaper.

But when Bear 148 crossed an invisible border and left the park, she set into motion a series of events that eventually led to her death nearly 500 km from her home, spurring major public outcry.

Listen to the trailer for Bear 148 — and subscribe on your favourite podcast platform to automatically get the rest of the series when we release it next week.

Bear 148 host Molly Segal is a Banff-based superstar audio journalist who has made documentaries for CBC Radio’s The Current, Quirks & Quarks and The Doc Project, as well as for NPR’s Here & Now.

She looks back on Bear 148’s life and asks tough questions: Was Bear 148 in the wrong? Or were we? And what does this animal's story mean for the future of bears and other wildlife who — by necessity — live in close proximity to humans?

Intrigued? Please listen and subscribe today.

Podcast platforms elevate shows that are popular, so by subscribing today you are helping us to reach more listeners when we release the full series next week. If you like the trailer, please also post a review, because that's also critical to reaching more listeners.

Thanks!
