Hi everyone,

Straight to it- this Friday we have a climate change workshop in the evening at the Friends Meeting House. The event will look at how we communicate; how to raise the topic, listen, and engage with others on an important and matter that affects us all. Places are limited and popular, so booking is essential.

Then on Saturday 15th we have a CropShare day gathering at Willow Farm in Lode, a writing workshop from Clare Crossman entitled 'Mapping the River: Nature Writing and the City' starting at the OtherSyde venue next to the Museum of Technoology, and lastly a Discovery Day for Eddington, looking into sustainability and Cambridge's newest district. A wide range of activities, stalls, talks, tours and more are on offer.

Sunday 16th brings us the Empty Common community garden meetup and a 'Pollination Celebration' from the Wildlife Truct BCN at Trumpington Meadows Nature Reserve in the afternoon.

On Wednesday 19th in the evening you might want to revisit OtherSyde with Transition Cafe, which this month is discussing globalisation and fairness in our changing societies. Is fair globalisation possible? What are our expectations of it going forwards? Again space are limited, so please book on Eventbrite.

Now then, on with the show:

(Please note these events are organised by a variety of groups - see details below..., Transition Events are marked with (TC)and in bold type.)

19:00-21:00, Friends Meeting House Jesus Lane Cambridge

We're delighted to be offering a repeat of this workshop due to popular demand! Now with a more streamlined ticketing process. Psychotherapist Ro Randall of the Climate Psychology Alliance will explore what goes on beneath the surface when we try to talk about climate change with friends, colleagues and family when they're not so far along the journey as ourselves. We will look at how to listen properly, how to handle distress and how to cope with defensiveness so that we can both raise the subject and maintain relationships with those we care about. Booking is essential as places are limited, and although this event is free, we suggest a £5 donation on the door to cover room hire. Please book using this Billetto link

Saturday 22 June: PEACE CHILD "the story of how young people save humanity from climate change"

18:30-20:00, Main Hall, Mrs Howard Hall, Norton Way South, Letchworth

The Peace Child story pits young people against climate deniers, politicians, diplomats and hard-nosed oil executives - as they use love, cunning and old-fashioned real-politik, to fashion a solution to climate change. Its backdrop is the international fora for climate change: the catastrophe in Copenhagen, the fiasco of Rio+20 and the partial success of Paris. David Woollcombe's platform performance captures the energy of local young School Strike4Climate supporters, and includes powerful slides and songs by Cat Stevens and his brother David Gordon. It will be followed by a Question and Answer session. Tickets £5 available from Letchworth Tourist Information Centre or Eventbrite

Tuesday 25 June: Finding your Voice with Climate Change workshop

19:00-21:00, Friends Meeting House Jesus Lane Cambridge

Led by Ro Randall (Climate Psychology Alliance and co-founder of the Carbon Conversations project) we will use the Public Narrative techniques of Marshall Ganz to help you find effective ways of speaking to others about climate change, creating a story which explains briefly and compellingly why you care, why you want others to join you and why it's so important now. Attending both this and the companion workshop 'Taking the heat out of Climate Change' will give you the confidence both to speak up when you have the opportunity and to listen more effectively when that is more appropriate, but it's ok if you can only attend one. This event is free, but we gently suggest a £5 donation to cover costs. Please register your place at this Billetto link

Tuesday 25 June: Understanding how buildings affect their environment

19:15-21:00, Upper Hall, Mrs Howard Hall, Norton Way South, Letchworth

Julie Futcher, a regular speaker at CIBSE and CIBSE Home Counties North West Region events, will talk about how in increasingly dense urban environments, with building heights increasing, a building's boundary cannot be considered to lie at the building envelope but extends into the wider environment. City of London buildings will be used to illustrate how building design impacts on passive resources like light and ventilation, which in turn affect the neighbourhood air quality and the energy needs of surrounding buildings. Buildings are usually evaluated on their stand-alone merits, but is it tme to also judge them on their net-energy impact on the wider environment? Ticket Cost £3, available from Letchworth Tourist Information Centre or Eventbrite

From: Transition Town Letchworth and The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers

Thursday 27 June: Building for the Future

19:30, Friends Meeting House Jesus Lane

Traditional architecture evolved over centuries to keep people safe and comfortable within the local context, resources and climate. But our climate is changing - what happens when weather events become more extreme? What happens when grid energy supplies fail? How can we address the challenge of staying safe in our own homes? Specifically - how can we stay affordably comfortable in extreme cold and hot periods with little expenditure? Feeling too cold or hot in your own home is often a hidden problem in the UK today even for the apparently affluent middle classes. This talk will help you understand the associated challenges, pitfalls and sensible solutions to improving everyday thermal well-being at home. Susan Roaf is Heriot Watt University's Emeritus Professor of Architectural Engineering and currently sits on the UK Architects Registration Board. An award winning architect, author and teacher she believes many modern buildings are very poorly designed for their climates and the only truly sustainable buildings are those run largely with natural energy.

Dr Read's talk at the City Climate Leaders Forum earlier in the year saw delegates queuing up to invite him back to hear more. Dr Read's talk will be accompanied by CCF's brief formal AGM. We'll share the successes and challenges of operating in a very different landscape and seek your input into priorities for the future. Addressing the climate crisis has never been more urgent than it is now so we'd love you to join us. There will be time to mingle with speakers, staff, volunteers and fellow guests. Sunday 14 July: The Work that Reconnects

10:30-17:30, Romsey Mill, Hemmingford Road, Cambridge, CB1 3BZ

"The Work that Reconnects" is an experienctial process designed by Joanna Macy to help us connect with our energy and motivation to act for life on Earth. If, like many others, there are times when you feel overwhelmed, angry, fearful or numb in the face of the current global crises, this workshop is for you! Taking time to acknowledge and honour our (often conflicting) emotions in relation to the global challenges can help us find the energy to act on behalf of life on Earth, and can inspire a sense of connection, belonging and renewed hope for the future. During this workshop, we will dive deeply into a sense of wonder and gratitude for the precious gift of life on Earth, before facing any difficult emotions that may be arising in us. We will also connect empathically with the perspectives of others, including those who hold opposite views to us, as well as members of other species, and we will explore positive ways forward. This workshop is being offered by Anna McIvor and Nicholas Wilkinson. For more information and to book, please see the eventbrite page here. There is a suggested donation of £15-25 to cover costs.
