Weekly Update from Your Alderman
View this email in your browser
June 14, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

This week Care for Real celebrated the re-opening of their newly renovated facility. The remodeling allows them to maximize the use of their space and better serve their clients. The re-oriented reception area can now accommodate up to 75 clients at a time, ensuring that no one has to wait outside to get in. Staff members have more productive office space, and the clothing closet has been expanded. Congratulations to Lyle Allen and his team on this great achievement.

At City Council this week I gave my first report as Chairman of the Committee on Housing & Real Estate, and the Council confirmed Marisa Novara as the Commissioner of the Housing Department. I look forward to working with her to address the housing issues facing our city, in particular the need to increase affordable housing throughout the city.

I issued a Public Safety Update earlier this week regarding increased gun activity in the Ward. The 20th District made an arrest in connection with Monday night's shooting on Hollywood, and both the 20th and 24th District continue investigations on the other incidents. Earlier this week my office hosted a breakfast in partnership with Ceasefire to help connect people living in the Argyle area with needed resources. Our efforts continue to help support those in need on Argyle as a way to make it safer for us all. Additionally, we will be installing more cameras in the Ward and trimming trees in the Thorndale area to allow greater visibility. Please see below to learn what CAPS Beat you live in and a schedule of upcoming beat meetings.

On Wednesday evening, more than 60 neighbors attended a community meeting regarding a proposed development at 5950 N. Sheridan. The proposed development is a six-story, 59-unit residential building with 61 parking spaces. The developer is seeking a zoning variance on the proposed height for the building. Current zoning allows for a 60-foot building, but the proposed plans show 66-foot height, to allow for enough natural light in the apartments.

Because the developer is not seeking a zoning change or a Planned Development, the Affordable Requirements Ordinance (ARO) is not triggered with this project. That means that there is no requirement by the City to include affordable units on site. I have requested that the developer voluntarily include affordable units, but at this time his plan is for the project to include only market rate units. This variance was supported by ASCO (Association of Sheridan Condo Owners) and at our meeting on Wednesday the community voted 48-17 in support of the requested zoning variance. I will be supporting the zoning variance request for the project to move forward. As this project progresses, I will continue the conversation with the developer about finding ways to add affordable units.

This afternoon I will join my colleagues Alderman James Cappleman and Alderman Matt Martin at Uptown United's State of Uptown luncheon. We will share our vision for Uptown as we embark on a new term on City Council. I plan to discuss how my office is working with CTA and our local Chambers of Commerce to plan for the upcoming RPM project, specifically around supporting businesses that will be impacted by construction.

Congratulations to the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce on a successful Midsommarfest last weekend. This annual event is our local official start of summer. Tomorrow the summer traditions continue with the opening of the Edgewater Farmer's Market season! The Edgewater Farmers Market takes place every Saturday, 8am to 1pm, in the Broadway Armory Parking Lot, 5917 N. Broadway. Click here for more information on the Edgewater Farmers Market.

I'd like to wish a happy Father's Day to the dads in the neighborhood. This Sunday, my daughter Katie and I will be celebrating the day by joining with several Sacred Heart School families and thousands more running in the Race Against Hate. This annual event in Evanston joins people together in unity against racial hatred and violence, and remembers Ricky Byrdsong, who was killed by a white supremacist. Please consider donating to this cause, click here for more information.

As you are celebrating Father's Day this weekend, please support local businesses. There are plenty of fantastic restaurants, theatres, and shops in our community that can show your appreciation to a father figure in your life.

Enjoy your weekend, and Happy Father's Day.

Sincerely,

Harry Osterman
Alderman, 48th Ward

Construction on Hollywood Ave.
As part of the utility relocation project to prepare for the upcoming CTA RPM project, ComEd will be installing a manhole and conduit underground beneath Hollywood. While crews are on Hollywood, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction for 24 hours a day, and the project is expected to wrap up around July 8. Please be aware that there may be traffic delays heading to and from Lake Shore Drive due to this work, and adjust your commute accordingly. If you have any questions about this or other CTA-related work, please email ally@48thward.org.
