Invisible to Visible

On Sunday we continued to explore the way God created the world during our “Let It Be…” summer series. We focused on the idea that God created humans in his image. As is usually the case while preaching, there is a lot more I'd like to explore in the Bible than we have time to cover.

One text that we did not talk about on Sunday is Colossians 1:15. This text was written by Paul and it aids us in our understanding of reflecting God’s image into the world.
Here are Paul’s words:

“Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.”
-Colossians 1:15

It is such a simple statement. Yet the more you reflect on it, the deeper the implications become. Take some time to reflect on these ideas:

1. God Is Invisible.

You and I cannot see God. I wish we could- that would make faith a lot easier! But God has not chosen to reveal God’s self in this way.

2. You Were Created To Reflect God’s Image.

You were made in the image of God to reflect and represent God’s heart and intentions in the world. We do our best, but sometimes God’s image is distorted in us. We reflect our own desires into the world in place of God’s.

3. Jesus Is The Visible Image Of The Invisible God.

When you feel like you are need more guidance into how to reflect God’s image, look to Jesus. Jesus, God in the flesh, is our ultimate example for how to live in the image of God.

God has given us a profound gift by sending his Son Jesus into the world. Not only does Jesus provide abundant life, but Jesus also provides an example of how to reflect God’s image into the world.

This Colossians verse makes it clear that when you see Jesus, you see God. If you wonder what God is like, look at Jesus. See how Jesus lived, what Jesus taught and how Jesus loved.  If you feel God’s image is being distorted in your life, examine Jesus’s life as a way of getting back on track.

The rest of the verse says this…

“Jesus existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth.”
-Colossians 1:16

See you on Sunday!
