UPDATE FROM ASIA

Greetings from Singapore. Shark Stewards is in year six working in SE Asia tracking and documenting the shark fin and wildlife trade and developing solutions to reduce the greatest threat to sharks. With our cultural advisor Dr. Vincent Yip, we are doing trade research and documentation. Dr. Yip is a Singaporean -Chinese scholar and formerly worked for the Ambassador to China. We his guidance we are building new partnerships including youth at the United World College of Southeast Asia (UWCSEA) and local NGO Dorsal Effect developing an Asian alliance to stop the fin trade. Singapore is # 2 in the global shark fin trade and has huge potential for a win.

An advertisement near my Singapore hotel. Shark fin is everywhere and sharks are disappearing. You  can make a difference.

CITES UPDATE

Due to the tragic sectarian violence in Sri Lanka,  The Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES) meeting CoP18 has been postponed and moved to Geneva. In the meantime we will be continuing to build international support to protect mako sharks and guitarfish.

Globally Mako sharks are disappearing from overfishing and the shark fin trade. Called "Qun Chi" or the King of Shark Fin in the shark fin trade, the species of giant guitarfish and wedgefish have among the highest valued fins and are severely threatened. AppendixII listing will make trade in fins from these species illegal without permit and require in-country management plans by signatories. We are seeking sponsors to support campaign materials, fees and travel.

Our children's future depends on the health of the oceans. The Aquatic Park Stewards program teaches hundreds of middle schoolers annually about marine ecosystems (which includes sharks!), including how to take action to protect the San Francisco Bay. Join our movement to save sharks, reduce plastic and protect ocean health every second Sunday, year round. Company groups and team building welcome. Our next cleanup is in Kota Kinabalu with our friends the Trash Heroes of Borneo, and July 5 in San Francisco.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE

Meet Beth Stevens. For over 4 years, Beth has been actively engaged in our Aquatic Park Stewards Community and Youth Program. A North Beach native and our leading beach captain, Beth is frequently at her local beach at Aquatic Park, and every second Sunday during our monthly plastic surveys and cleanups. An Executive Assistant in the audit practice at KPMG in San Francisco, Beth is passionate about animals, loves the ocean, and enjoys live music and home brewed IPA with her husband Don.
On World Oceans Day, Beth, Diane, Viktoria and a team of other volunteers cleaned the beach, picked up the butts (170) in our National Park, and were joined for the second year by our super kid Robbie Bond, founder of Kids Speak for Parks (featured above). Robbie is a real youth leader catalyzing supporting for National Parks and ocean health. We are proud to partner with this young man and know you will see more of him. Thanks Beth, Robbie and all of our volunteers- we rely on you to save sharks and ocean health.

The Spicy Shark- Eat the Heat, Not the Fins
A new line of innovative and creative spicy sauces has been launched by New England shark lover Gabe DiSaverio called the Spicy Shark. Passionate about sharks, Gabe, his wife and friends decided to launch a line of hot sauces, including sriracha, wing sauce, hot honey, and hot maple syrup. Their sharks cover a 5-fin range of heat from mild to wicked hot, and have savory benefits for your health and for sharks.

Benefitting shark stewards and blue sharks, $1 for each bottle of Spicy Shark Blue Shark Hot Maple Blueberry Syrup goes to shark conservation. They also have a super cool Spicy Shark T that benefits Shark Stewards. Please don't let the Year of the Shark be the year of the blues for sharks. Put a Spicy Shark into your life!

Shark Week - Live From the Field

Every year, Discovery Channel's Shark Week draws millions of viewers attention towards sharks. Unfortunately, programs emphasizing shark attacks reinforces a negative view of these amazing and increasingly threatened animals. This year we are live-streaming from Timor Leste to support shark and marine protection with Blue Timor. Tune in and put out a shark SOS streaming shark love through Instagram, Facebook. I will be doing my best to live streams on social media given the +14 hour time difference, providing shark field updates from Indonesia and Timor Leste. Our shark week will show the real thing- living sharks, threats to sharks and how we save them.
With your support, we keep sharks swimming and the ocean healthy.

Founded in 2006, Shark Stewards has fought against shark finning and the fin trade to save sharks from extinction. Sign the shark fin ban petition, social share on Instagram or donate to support our work. Or come to our events and volunteer!
