A Very Feminist Pride Month

Happy Pride to our LGBTQ+ members! June is Pride month, commemorating the Stonewall Uprising, which was ignited by trans women of color resisting police violence at the Stonewall Inn, and led to the LGBTQ rights movement. This year is the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, and while we've made enormous strides toward queer liberation, we still have much work to do. Honor LGBTQ+ Tulsans by attending one of the local events below and making your home, workplaces and houses of worship safe for queer folks. Unsure where to start? Check out PFLAG's guides to being a straight ally and being a trans ally.

Powerhouse trio Cecile Richards, Ai-jen Poo, and Alicia Garza are pushing a “women’s new deal” — an agenda that addresses the persistent pay gap, staggering child care costs, rising maternal mortality, no family leave, and a government that continues to fail women — through a new political action group called Supermajority.

June 10 is mother's equal pay day

Mothers earn 69¢ for every dollar dads make, so June 10 is Mom's Equal Pay Day, or the day marking how much longer an average woman has to work to make as much as their counterpart did the year before. This year's other equal pay days: August 22 for Black women (61¢ to a White man's dollar), September 23 for Native women (58¢), and November 20 for Latinas (53¢).

Living Arts of Tulsa, 307 E Brady St (map)

A group exhibition that illuminates the histories and presence/presents of LGBTQIA+ art collectives and projects that help to ensure visibility and resilience in the middle of the map. This exhibition highlights myriad ways in which people identify and build community through visual practices. Certainly, the work shown within the exhibition is a fraction of the groups, collectives, and artistic endeavors that are undertaken, upheld, and created within this region. This exhibition acknowledges the multitude of LGBTQIA+ elders and siblings that have created space, provided safety, and risked livelihoods in order to live authentically.

Thursday, June 13, 8:30am – 10:00am
YWCA Community Room, 1910 S Lewis Ave (map)

Oftentimes recruiting and hiring systems can be set up to bring in the most similar candidate, not the BEST candidate. In the spirit of intentionality and continuous improvement, why settle for hiring and recruiting the way it’s been done in the past? There is an opportunity to improve our organizations’ return on hiring dollars, increases our attractiveness to and ability to retain diverse hires and reduces the risk of discrimination.

In this session, we’ll learn common recruiting and interviewing mistakes and how to build a process that helps eliminate bias and enables the best candidates to shine through.
