Tom Foley is Retiring as Director of King’s Ringers
Tom Foley has been Calvin’s Bell Choir Director for the past 12 years, over 1/3 of the King’s Ringers history. The King’s Ringers play 9-10 times a year, including special services such as Christmas and Easter. Tom has been a gifted director, accommodating a variety of skill levels while challenging the Bell Choir to stretch for their musical potential. With a high level of expertise and a deep sense of the role that music plays in worship, Tom has done a wonderful job and we have been blessed to have his leadership. Besides directing the Bell Choir, Tom is active in our church, serving as Chair of the Worship Committee, co-chair of the Concerts at Calvin series, serving on the Building and Grounds Committee, and often tackling projects needing to be done around the church. Tom and Carolyn both plan to stay active but will spend more time traveling and camping, one of their great passions. Please join us this Sunday, June 16th, as we honor Tom following the worship service.

David Day
June 18, 1938 - June 7, 2019

David Day was born June 18, 1938 in Portland, OR. He grew up in NE Portland and graduated from Grant High School in 1956. He played several sports in high school including baseball and football. He went to the University of Oregon and graduated in 1960 with a degree in Business. He married his high school sweetheart Kay Armour in 1958. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and was a lifelong Duck fan. His son Michael was born the day after he graduated. His daughter Susan was born in Eugene in 1961.

Dave and Kay were married for 61 years. After a successful business career, he retired at age 62. Dave loved his fishing trips with his lifelong friends. Many laughs and memories were shared over the years for this annual event. Dave and Kay loved going to the Oregon coast where they had a house in Cannon Beach. Dave and Kay joined Calvin Presbyterian Church and Dave cherished his Thursday morning bible studies with friends. He also served as a Deacon.  He was passionate about playing golf and spent many days playing courses in Oregon and California. Dave and Kay traveled together and with friends.

In 2004 Dave and Kay moved to Palm Desert, CA. They were members of the Oasis Country Club and Dave was involved with the Homeowners Assoc. In 2012 Dave and Kay moved back to Oregon and lived in Lake Oswego near family.

Dave passed away on June 7, 2019 of kidney failure.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kay Armour, son Michael (Mary Jo), daughter Susan Holden (Del), grandchildren Kevin Day (Gina) and Kristin Day (fiancé Joe Packer) and great grandchildren Ella and Halle Day.

There will be a service for Dave on June 15th, 11 am at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 10445 Canterbury Lane, Tigard.

Condolences can be sent to Kay Day, 5005 Foothills Rd., Apt I, Lake Oswego, OR 97034.

Sunday Morning Bible Study
Sue Van Stelle’s Sunday morning class has been reading through the Book of Acts, learning how Christianity began. For three weeks in June, Sue will be covering what happened after that. Join us in Good Shepherd Hall for a very brief illustrated introduction to more than 2,000 years of history. Come for the church history, stay for the changes in art, clothing, and hairstyles!
  • 6/16 | Illustrated Church History – The Crusades through the Reformation
  • 6/23 | Illustrated Church History – The Challenges of Revolution, World War, and a Global World
Weekly Worship Bulletin and Announcements
We are continuing to explore ways to use the projection screens in worship—liturgy, hymns, images, announcements. As good stewards of creation and our finances, we would like to decrease paper and printing costs. So, instead of using a paper bulletin, please try using the screens.

Important announcements can be received through our weekly email, This Week at Calvin, and the Announcements that scroll before the service.

As a new feature, the weekly bulletin and announcements can be found on the web at sundaysatcalvin.org. You are welcome to use your smartphone or tablet in worship, preview the bulletin, or catch up on announcements throughout the week.

And, of course, should you want or need a paper bulletin and announcements sheet, copies will be available.
Sundays at Calvin
Help Needed
  • Money Counters
Monday mornings, 9 – 11 AM, the Sunday offering is counted and deposited in the bank. We could use some extra volunteers to help count receipts, once or twice a month. Please contact our bookkeeper Alice Daniels or Pastor Wallace. Compensation: important volunteer work and all the coffee you can drink.
Intergenerational Grounds Work Party
Once a month the Buildings and Grounds Committee holds a work party to clean up the grounds and do minor work around the church. Saturday, June 29, beginning at 8:00 am, members of the church are invited to help spruce up the building and grounds. All ages are invited and encouraged to participate. Come for an hour, stay for the morning, have fun with other Calvin members—all the juice, coffee and donuts you can eat—and help care for our church.
Summer Reading
How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster is a new book in our library. (Don’t let the title scare you! It is a comfortable and informative read.) Writers use all kinds of literary devices to convey meaning—narrative, allusions, symbols, literary forms, myth, archetypes, foreshadowing, themes, context, the list goes on... By gaining a greater understanding of not only what an author is trying to say, but how he/she is attempting to say it, this book offers the insights and tools for a deeper read.
With chapter titles like “Every Trip is a Quest (Except When It’s Not)”, “Nice to Eat with You: Acts of Communion", “When in Doubt, It’s from Shakespeare…”, “….Or the Bible", “Yes, She’s a Christ Figure, Too”, “It’s All About Sex…” “…Except Sex", “If She Comes Up, It’s Baptism…” “Geography Matters," “It is Never Just Heart Disease… And Rarely Just Illness” and “Don’t Read with Your Eyes," anyone who loves to read will find this book enlightening and invaluable.

And that includes those who read the Bible. While we rightly elevate the Bible to the status of “holy” or “sacred,” that doesn’t negate the fact that it is also great literature—full of narratives, stories, symbols, allusions, myths, and all manner of literary devices. And to properly understand and open its treasures, it should be interpreted as literature, not read like a “how to” manual. Those who love (or perhaps have been perplexed by) the Bible, will find this book helpful  in opening its pages to the depth and meaning that lies beneath a flat literal reading of the scriptures.

How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster can be found in the Bible Study section of our library.

Intergenerational Ministry
Rev. Brian Heron, our Cascades Presbytery Presbyter for Vision and Mission, recently wrote that the rest of the country may soon be looking to churches in Washington and Oregon as leaders in engaging a new religious landscape in the USA. One of the ways Calvin is already acting as a pioneer in this area is by participating in our presbytery’s cohort on Intergenerational Ministry. Curious? Talk with Evelyn Eayrs, Anne McKee, Charmine Rone, or Sue Van Stelle about what they are learning.

Seeking Elders & Deacons to Serve
The Church Nominating Committee is prayerfully gathering names for potential Elders and Deacons to lead and serve our Church.

The basic job description for Elders:
  • Seek and discern the will of Christ in and for the congregation.
  • Articulate the congregation’s vision (why & where are we going!).
  • Broadly define strategic priorities (how will we get there?).
  • Because the Session’s principal role is visionary and strategic, with an “eye for the whole,” elders may serve as a participant on The Management Team, or on a committee/task force/ad hoc group, but not as a representative of Session, nor with the expectation of serving as the chairperson.

The basic job description for Deacons:
  • The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ.
  • It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.
  • They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the session.
  • Generally, each Deacon is given a parish (8-12 members of the congregation) to provide pastoral care and ongoing contact.

A form to nominate a church member (or self-nominate) can be found on the Good News Center. Or you can download a copy here. Please return the form to the file on the Good News Center or Pastor Wallace.

The Church Nominating Committee is composed of:
Matt Hughart, co-chair, Tommy Thorne, co-chair, Pam Duvall, Charmine Rone, Barbara Smith, Pastor Jim Wallace, ex officio.

Yoga Class

Beginning June 17, Yoga will be held in the Fellowship Hall, Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 8:30 am. All are welcome.
