Europe Remembers on Tour!  UK & Normandy

Over two weeks in May and June, the Europe Remembers team went to the UK and Normandy to launch an amazing two-year journey to hike the Liberation Route Europe’s International Hiking Trail from London to Berlin while tracing the footsteps of the western Allies during the liberation of Europe in 1944-1945.

Week 1: London to Portsmouth

On May 20th, the team headed to London for the official kick-off of the tour at the Churchill War Rooms featuring historian and BBC presenter Dan Snow and a number of veterans. Over the next three days, the team hiked from Alton to Portsmouth, discussing the “friendly invasion” of American/Canadian troops in the UK and the preparations for D-Day. The UK leg concluded on May 23rd at the D-Day Story Portsmouth with a special celebration with Lord Mayor, David Fuller, who was appointed a special ambassador of the Liberation Route, and a special live-streamed event at the historic Golden Lion Pub.
Week 2: 75th anniversary D-Day Normandy

Two weeks later on June 3rd, the team was in Normandy for the second leg of the tour commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The team visited each of the five D-Day beaches starting in the American sector of Utah and Omaha Beaches and finishing in the British/Canadian/Allied/Commonwealth sectors of Gold, Juno, and Sword Beaches.

Over the week, the team had the opportunity to interview various D-Day veterans and visitors as well as to visit important historical sites and museums. They also attended in several commemorative ceremonies including the Liberty Concert Normandy and a special ceremony in Arromanches honoring the Czech soldiers’ role in the Battle of Normandy.

The next legs of Europe Remembers on Tour! will take place mid-July for the civilian ceremony in Caen, and at the end of August to commemorate the liberation of Paris on August 25th. To know more, stay tuned via our social media channels!
Hiking Trail Crowdfunding Campaign
On May 20th in London, we launched an Indie go go crowdfunding campaign to raise the needed support for the Liberation Route Europe’s International Hiking Trail. This remembrance trail serves as a testament to the legacy of the veterans who liberated Europe in WWII.

The 3.000 km trail passes through five countries from London to Berlin, featuring specially designed "Vectors” (route markers) by Daniel Libeskind. It will launch in 2020 during the 75th anniversary celebrations of the end of WWII.

The campaign will run until July 20, and we are hoping to raise a total of €30,000. Thus far, we have raised €1050 thanks to a generous donation by Airborne Beer in the Netherlands.

Consider showing your support today to help make this Hiking Trail a reality by making a small donation to our crowdfunding campaign.
