June marks the mid-way in 2019. Importantly, Minister of State Jim Daly has said he will send draft update of mental health law through to the Mental Health Commission in July. This shows that the campaign to Reform the Mental Health Act is beginning to have an impact. Thank you to the thousands of supporters who have made a difference so far.

Travellers towards a more equitable Ireland post recognition
|
|
Mental Health Reform welcomed the opportunity to make a submission to the Seanad public consultation on 'Travellers towards a more equitable Ireland post recognition'.
In this submission, Mental Health Reform outlined recommendations on guidelines related to ethnic minorities and mental health. Specifically, the recommendations that ensure services are culturally aware, training for service providers, incorporating individual beliefs into care/ recovery plans, ensuring information is accessible, zero tolerance of disrespect and discrimination, and advoacacy supports.

Reform the Mental Health Act, 2001

The latest update on the campaign to reform the Mental Health Act, 2001, is that Minister Daly has committed to sending draft legislation through to the Mental Health Commission for review in July.
We need to keep up the political pressure to ensure that the legislation gets published soon. Since 2015, we have heard many promises from Ministers of State for Mental Health about intended deadlines for updated legislation. People cannot wait any longer to have their rights protected.
The Mental Health Act, 2001 is outdated, it does not comply with international human rights standards, and does not adequately protect people’s rights.

Technology & Student Mental Health Seminar
|
|
Mental Health Reform and the Union of Students in Ireland hosted a seminar on June 18th, exploring the implications technology has for supporting student’s mental health in third level education.
Speakers included:
- Prof Heleen Riper from VU The Netherlands,
- Prof Jacques van Lankveld from the Open University in the Netherdland,
- Charlotte van den Broucke, Pulso Europe, Belgiub,
- Dr Derek Richards, Silvercloud and
- Dr Conal Twomey, UCD.

Laugh Out Loud 2019 is taking place on July 6th in the GAA Hall, Athy. Featuring MC Shakara, DJ Redwood and Special Guests, it promises to be a great day of comedy and entertainment.
